Before standardized systems for classifying #famine existed, early hunger maps offered a way to visualize food insecurity. Mapping hunger has served both to mobilize public compassion and to exert control, shaping how famine is understood, addressed & remembered.

World War II saw the greatest spike in the number of episodes of #famine & #massstarvation in history. The Nazis’ starvation of the Jews in the Polish ghettos occupies a special place in this chapter of famine history.
