Cyntoia Brown was sentenced to life in prison when she was 16 years old. She took the life of her abuser in an attempt to escape a life of domestic violence and trafficking. Eventually, she was released because there was support across the world and understanding that she was a survivor. Cyntoia was given a chance, but many others like her remain in prison. Behind bars or behind closed doors — trauma embraces everyone in different ways and forced them to survive. Many incarcerated individuals are survivors of domestic violence, but they’re criminalized for the choices they made to escape, to cope or to live. It’s time to see the bigger picture and push for justice that heals instead of punishes. If you or someone you love are in need of support, please call the Domestic Violence National Hotline at (800) 799-7233. #DomesticViolence #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonths #DomestiveViolenceAwareness #DomesticViolenceSurvivors #Justice #CriminalJustice #TransformativeJustice #RestorativeJustice #CyntoiaBrown #TPP
