The traditional appeasement of the tech gods has taken place and British Fantasy Society's "Creative Fix" seminar has now kicked off! So grateful for the ✨ magic ✨ of technology - I'd never be able to attend this as an IRL event, but here I am in my slippers with a cuppa.

The words are on the page. 🙌 We're entering a week of edits in good stead. It's a Christmas miracle, etc.

Officially finished with contact hours and into the essay trenches. Two weeks, 7500 words to go. I oscillate hourly between "I have never had a thought in my life" and "this is the entire reason why I was put on this planet".

Today it was Black & Blue Oceanic Ecologies of the Middle Passage, a meeting with a potential supervisor (🤞), quick PowerPoint on digital research and authorial attribution, then a workshop on funding and grant writing ... Thursdays are my busiest and also my favourite day!

Next week's reading on the Modernism pathway addresses digital authorship and marketing in the internet era, and is an excellent time for me to remind everyone on Earth to read the free short story "The Egg" by Andy Weir who is a viral "success story" for indie authors!

Controversial topic in the seminar today on the use or avoidance of "I" in academic writing. Honestly seems like it could be a socioeconomic or demographic indicator based on the split of opinions!

So excited to be attending the Tolkein Society's seminar on Arda & Entangled Bodies today, reading Tolkein's works ecocritically. Thanks so much to the organisers for making this so accessible and free on Zoom!

Ran into a professor who taught me at undergraduate level today. "How wonderful," he said, on learning I'd been doing nothing of joy or importance or even related to my field for the last ten years, "-that you've come back to us." 🥺

Discovered this little beauty on Substack today and think we could all use a little reminder. Alienation is not a consequence of capitalism - it's a feature.

Busy day studying "texts in translation" (in quotations because I'm a sad monolingual). Might need to start learning a new language on a platform that isn't Duolingo... But do I pick for practicality, ease, or literary distance from my mother tongue?

It's the first seminar of my Literature MA today! Texts include Hamlet, The Waste Land, a letter from Keats to his friend Woodhouse and two poems by Plath. So about what you might expect for an Introduction to Literary Research (...)

Jay Hulme is a treasure that we do not deserve. Christian LGBT+ Poetry was not a genre I knew I wanted more of. Now I'm like...grabby hands.

You're feeding the sheep, Jay. Job well done.

Reading Parable of the Talents now by Octavia E Butler. Found this passage relevant to our times. Actually this entire book is relevant to our dystopian reality. #booksky #booktok
