Kind of neat how this year we've had not one but two movies about a being who is brought into this world because daddy issues, then rebels against his creator who subsequently dies and, granted immortality, sets off on a journey of discovery in an effort to find meaning in his own existence

Moved onto the next crappy late '70s Italian SF movie in the sequence, and it has an early scene which is quite literally this Monty Python bit from 1969

“Are we having… FUN yet?”

The thing about the NOW YOU SEE ME movies is that I haven't seen any of them.

GUN CRAZY (1950). A hugely stylish and clearly influential noir pushing the boundaries of the Code with a bank heist audaciously shot in a single take entirely from the back seat of the getaway car that would slot right into any number of contemporary movies.

Watching high-quality 1968 SF movie THE BAMBOO SAUCER. One suspects the saucer in question is not in fact made from bamboo.

Watched THE ASSESSMENT, which sidesteps the worst instincts of social dystopia movies while affording Alicia Vikander an outstanding opportunity to indulge both in pure acting workshop theatrics and a spot of dancing. Good, chilling high concept SF. Easily clears that pesky Bechdel-Wallace test too!

Newsflash, dipshit: the novel doesn't pass it either.

To mark Lee Tamahori's passing, I'm on a first-time watch of his 1996 '50s-set neo-noir MULHOLLAND FALLS, which is doing a pretty good job of underlining just how hard this specific genre is to crack: L.A. CONFIDENTIAL (1997) this is not, although it was clearly reference material for L.A. NOIRE

November 5th, when we celebrate ineptitude in the field of domestic terrorism and religiously-motivated regime change by blowing shit up and burning effigies of the ringleader

So this year I have watched two movies starring Sydney Sweeney and yesterday at the cinema I saw trailers for two more movies both starring and produced by Sydney Sweeney which are releasing this year and my main takeaway is, damn girl, take a breath

The BFI running a James Cameron season that omits THE ABYSS is disappointing to say the least, given that it is his most mature movie at a narrative level whilst also being entirely illustrative of the preoccupations that permeate his entire filmography and life

It’s impressive how much Mike Johnson actually looks like a ventriloquist’s dummy. And we all know whose hand is up his ass.

Watching THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN starring Moff Tarkin, Count Dooku and some guy who was never in a STAR WAR, and it's kind of hilarious how all these different versions of Mary Shelley's story just mix and match characters and plot elements or plain make new shit up as they best see fit
