Such a good rec for Beyond Evil here! And I've only seen two of these (Beyond Evil and The Devil Judge), but given how much I agree with the reviewer I'm gonna have to check out the other few I'm not too squeamish to watch.
It becomes apparent that this was never really about clever killers and the cops who chase them. It’s about how easy it is for marginalized people to be harmed in a society that barely tolerates their existence. It’s about the cruel, selfish, callous things people in power will do without a second thought to protect their status. It’s about how the very idea of justice must be examined when our system for achieving it is defined by people in positions of authority who care only about maintaining their authority. It’s about those complex webs of interconnectedness, the way communities share in the experiences of violence and fear and grief, but also warmth and care and love. It’s dark and heartbreaking but also beautiful in unexpected ways.

2024.12.19 there's no need for sunshine, i tell the universe. i'll be asleep in the morning anyway, and no one needs more warmth when we haven't bathed in days. let the soft rains fall, so my sniffling won't echo through the door. let them remind me of the night you died. i didn't know a person could be so cold. then again, that should've been no surprise; our family works best apart. i wish it didn't take loss to remind us of our impermanence. regret is an itch you can never scratch, death an amputation. i haven't reached out then and i certainly can't now. not when there's glass, then there'll be dirt, then there'll be miles and hours of bus rides. i can't remember the last time we hugged. it wasn't when your frail arms fell outstretched as i sat on your bed, telling you that i'd be back on saturday after our finals. and it wasn't when you laid on your bed, so still, my hand on your head, your chest caved in. i've forgotten. will you remind me in my dreams? 1:41 am 2024.12.27 have you seen my father? his son has not seen him. my brother was doing projects, or he may have been sleeping. have you seen my father? his sister’s not seen him. she can't come home so quick, a plane ticket’s too expensive. have you seen my father? his daughter just saw him off that night, he laid limp, no heartbeat nor breathing. she will see her father for seven more nights after, she'll see him be lowered in the dirt six feet under. have you seen my father? i’ve not seen him since. his daughter's still waiting for him in her sleep. biannual 2025.01.01 i lost two people last year: a father and a lover. one's still a friend to me, the other, now a memory — heartbreak of different kinds still occupy my mind. forgiveness, so foreign, yet so quickly given to one, not as easily the other, for i still went through anger. i left this resentment behind in the previous year, still i feel so much regret and shame. i wonder if they've forgiven me all the same.
