This is an important book because it’s a cautionary tale about how authors can look at data and conclude that it means the opposite of what it shows, and make that sound convincing.

Implying that anyone who can’t say exactly what that should look like should be quiet is just a cop out tonskebxe the discussion. This starts with identifying the gaps and needs. It is, in fact, a meaningful contribution despite not being the detailed solution.

Saying people just want “magical fairy dust” is a BS cop out (that’s as polite as I can put it). We want our govt to acknowledge there’s a problem and use the massive expertise and the examples of other countries to figure out how to solve it it here.

We aren’t other countries - we are the one that spends twice as much per capita as our peers, still leaves people without access, and we die younger.

Yes! Somebody spent time writing that quote for her and it’s gibberish.

On the licensing and enforcement - it’s a political problem because of our cultural norms about the “right” to operate heavy machinery on public roads. I am pessimistic about seeing that change. One of the reasons that car supremacy is just a bad approach to mobility.

Some people hate speed and red light cameras but I’m a fan. Plus localities get $ from people driving badly instead of my property taxes (though now and then I’m one of the people getting ticket!). Americans are generally horrible drivers though.

I think the bigger idea for self driving cars would be to eliminate to a if privately owned cars (which sit parked 20 hours a day) with a fleet of cars operating 24x7 and which don’t need to be parked in giant lots on otherwise productive land in dense areas.

Total “I had a plan for this moment” vibe.

By improving. It’s a reasonable point. They’re not there yet for sure.

Finally: I love cars! I love driving! But cars are not “great,” they’re useful tools that we manage and use very poorly in the US.
December 21, 2025 at 10:00 PM
What’s more, our over-reliance on cars has warped the way we manage transportation in cities and some underserved people who can’t afford cars and who can’t drive due to disability or aging.

It’s not working. US auto death rates are climbing even as they decrease in other developed countries; licensing requirements are lax and enforcement is poor. Driving in Germany and then returning to the US is a shocking contrast.

at the time it was released there was probably a good chance of having the glasses, you might have just gone to see "Friday the 13th, Part 3 in 3D."
