I left Brazil and became a US citizen partly to get away from an autocratic and corrupt military regime. That was 50 years ago. I never imagined then that I would be flying Brazil and Ukraine flags now to show support for the countries on the frontlines of a global battle for democracy.

We might start by digging into these numbers (2021 Kaiser Foundation). Why are we so exceptional? And not in a good way. One thing we have become very good at is normalizing the unacceptable. How about if any adult who puts a gun in the hands of an unsupervised minor goes to jail?
