Cutting 2nd year PhD students from NSF #GRFP applications is devastating. Here's my GRFP story: 🧵As a first-gen student, I didn't know what the GRFP was when I got accepted to a PhD program. I was 34, had 3 kids, and left a six-figure job for $18k/yr TA stipend. By the start of my second year (1/7)

Our fall semester #EucPhys project has me dreaming about a sabbatical in Australia someday. Just need to do that tenure thing, then find someone willing to host me 🫣

Such a joy to see Andrew Cinquini’s master’s degree conferred today. We are going to miss his presence in the ecophys lab!! Congratulations, Andrew, and to all those graduating this summer 🥳🥳🥳

Au revoir, @maryloumantova.bsky.social! The end of my lab’s “Mantova era” & sad tears are tempered by joy for your starting a permanent position at @inrae-france.bsky.social! Grateful our first joint project as PIs, just funded, will keep us working closely together. You are already missed, Marylou!

Wondering where to submit your abstract for #AGU25
@agu.org annual meeting? Consider our cross-scale "Forest Physiological and Ecological Processes from Molecules to Ecosystems" organized session (#246685)! #EcoPhys

Urban deciduous trees can retain canopy beneath a street lamp for days or weeks longer (delayed senescence). Evergreen plants maintain other light signaled responses (delayed nyctinasty here, the dark side has “closed” leaflets typical of nighttime). Both likely quality, not quantity, of PPFD.

If you're waiting on a reply, a peer review, or other effort from me--please be patient. I urgently left to document a developing forest die-off event more intense than any I've seen. No obvious biotic agents, dead & dying include multiple Pinus & Juniperus, many Quercus, & shrubs. #WhatKillsTrees

What a great time at the Xylem International Meeting #XIM6 this week in Spain! Great to bring so many members of the lab this time. Looking forward to #XIM7 in South Africa in 2027!

I think being a good PI is mostly about helping folks get un-stuck. I really enjoy seeing mentees take off once they’re past a seemingly intractable problem. Had another chance at that this afternoon 🦝
Help all you can, all you can, and we’ll make it through the dumpster fire 2025 is sure to be.

Had a great time talking #WhatKillsTrees at AGU this year! I shared my recent work with PhD student Emily Perry on plant thermal limits in dry air #HotEnoughToKill, and PhD student Medelin Kant did an awesome job presenting her work on pine survival in the Anthropocene!!

When it comes to measuring plant thermal limits, are we in hot water?? Excited to wrap this project up with Emily Perry, Medelin Kant, and Marylou Mantova before #AGU24 next month. #WhatKillsTrees #HowHotIsTooHot
