"Taking the oil" is not a thing. What does happen:

Get access w/o having to pay the people of that nation most of the profits and deal with labor and environmental standards cause the new govt is compliant to US interests. This profits the US corporations doing the work (political donors) and […]

So many problems go away when there's no central corporate platform. There's no ad model that creates an incentive to spend all our time with them, make us think a certain way or trigger us to keep us engaged. The accounts become like websites in that they are not vouched for and we have to […]

Just using the #owncast app on Roku on my TV feels like a revolutionary act. Like the first time you put up a website or got your podcast to work. Connected to an indy online radio stream via URL. Or understood ActivityPub. It kinda forces me to imagine a world where all video is available this […]

I'm watching this on my TV via Roku and the #owncast app. It's part of what I want for the #CCMusicClub. That we could help every online radio DJ do this. That we could help musicians broadcast their show. No corporate crap involved.

CC @ryno @musicman @bsots @Cheesetruck @lorenzosmusic […]

Thinking checks and balances and transparency are cool, it seems to me like we should want agency directors chosen by the president and confirmed by Congress for four years and only removed for cause. The director should be able to replace staff if they refuse to follow their legal orders quite […]

Chris Rufo makes a passionate plea for Americans to confine themselves to fact-based bigotry and fear and ignorance.
*Chris Rufo* warns X is making the right too conspiratorial:

"Americans can stick to...empirical reality or...follow conspiracy theories... For the Right, the danger is that an increasingly large fraction of our political coalition is choosing the second path"

We need to somehow rebrand the corporate platform algo as a Faustian deal with the devil. They are getting a boost only to be locked in and make it harder for all their followers to leave too. Which then makes it harder for those people's friends to leave also.

Got a good hashtag?

attention-driven platformism is a suicide pact. every influence grifter eventually faces the truth that they don’t have the control they imagine; that malign structural forces erected for chaos answer to no one.

#affordability will happen when the government efficiently provides the services that the people demand that the market can't do well and we prevent the concentration of corporations beyond what's necessary to provide goods/services at a reasonable price.

Zero intelligence secrets, sources, or methods are put at risk by showing a video of a boat exploding, or of shipwrecked people clinging to boat pieces hit by a missile and exploding.

Such a video reveals absolutely nothing about how the US identified that boat, located it, or chose to attack it.

I argued with so many back then. That maybe it would end up bad but that at that moment, the people they were believing were clearly lying or spinning. That the evidence didn't say what they said it did. That they were clearly biased or their logic was faulty. And I explained why I thought that […]

The vast majority of people were not rude re Charlie Kirk's death. Same now with Rob Reiner.

The exceptions choose to use tragedy to get attention for themselves, knowing the algos tuned for profit would oblige them. They are engaged in propaganda just as much as the big media they complain about.

The vision of #ActivityPub AFAIK is that social media servers would be as ubiquitous as websites and email servers and just as independent. That's not the model of #bluesky relays or any other social media model I'm aware of.

Am I wrong to think that matters in regards to free speech and […]
