close-up of several composite flowers, each with several dozen tightly-packed tiny, light purple-blue disk florets (and no ray florets). on one flower on the right side, only 8 florets around the edges of the disk have opened up, which allows for detailed examination: each floret has a tubular corolla with five spreading triangular lobes and a very long, string-like, bifurcated style which extends far beyond the mouth of the floret. on the left side, there's a flowerhead on which every floret has opened; it resembles a pom-pom. the string-like styles obscure everything beneath them. a pic from further back: a flat-topped terminal panicle of light purple-blue composite flowers with many disk florets (but no ray florets) each with a long, string-like bifurcated style which make a flowerhead resemble a pom-pom when all of the florets are open. a mistflower seen from a high angle, growing on the forest floor by a patch of poison ivy. the plant is a little over knee-high and terminates in a small flat-topped panicle of light purple-blue flowers. its light green leaves are opposite, triangular, with many little teeth.
