The writing improves exponentially from book 1 to 2. The characters are more fleshed out as Dinniman takes his story to the next level, however the world building feels a little more stagnant with some minor bright spots. I attribute this to settling into the series groove which is great!

This was a reread having read it the first time last year. This time I did the audiobook. Holy sh*t Jeff Hays is such a talent! My thoughts on book 1 haven't changed. The beginning is the weakest with the story & writing improving until your addiction is complete.

The Good: Mamdani winning
The Bad: Already being told to temper my expectations.

No. I will hold Mamdani's feet to the fire to ensure he gets it done. This is not the time to stop and pat ourselves on the back for electing him. He's got work to do.

I finished this book recently and I'm still unable to wrap my head around it. The prose is beautiful, the ambiance unsettling, the characters...a little annoying, but I'll give grace as it is YA. The ED imagery was more disturbing than the monsters, so be aware if that is a trigger.

This book runs on a great premise and engaging vibes, all wrapped up in mediocre writing. Thankfully, that didn't detract from my enjoyment. This was a great sci-fi read! Weir is clearly a science nerd and I love that his outlet is writing stories like this.

Trust me, as disappointed as you evangelicals are that the rapture didn't happen, those of us that wanted to finally experience peace on Earth are a million times more upset.

I'm just as hyped as the next fan to see the adaptation of Project Hail Mary, but I really need people to stop claiming a main character reveal is a "twist."
Rocky is introduced at the beginning of Act 2 and the book has loooong acts. It makes sense why he's in the movie trailer.

Is this a well written book? No, no it very much is not.
Am I enjoying the fuck out of this story? Abso-fucking-lutely

The amount of people who are being fired from their jobs because they aren't "sad enough" over a complete stranger's death. A stranger mind you who advocated for violence against anything not CIS, White, Hetero, or Male is absolutely ridiculous.

This was an interesting first John Green read and I do not regret it. This book does more to establish and explain systemic issues, from disease to poverty to racism, in our society than most required college text books, and in fewer pages.
You should read this.

This is equal parts super intriguing and depressing. I learned so much about the power of books, AND that we are spiraling into the abyss of fa*ism. Learning about the birth of the CIA through librarians is cool, but if nothing else, read this to get radicalized for books!

As far as queer novellas go, this was good. The characters and the setting were dark and unsettling. Easily could be expanded upon. That said, this did suffer from a lack of narrative flow. Illogical scene shifts plus nonsensical character choices left me slightly disappointed.

Okay, someone watched the ✨Amazing✨ Christmas movie Klaus, saw a twink villager and a bear woodsman, and used that as inspiration to write a queer horror story. It's a good read, but it's hard NOT to see the comparisons. 😆

This definitely reads like a newer classic. You can see how the writing is more modernized in comparison to older classics. There were some things done right, and other things...Irregardless of everything, framing racism from a yt POV in the '60s is a choice.

This book reads as a classic. It's the same feeling I got when I read To Kill a Mockingbird for the first time. Only now, as an adult, I wonder at the implications of a yt woman telling this story. This doesn't make the book wrong, just something I'm pondering while reading it.
