I liked the older ones for the mech designs, the newer ones just seem to be "designed" by sticking more unfeasibly large things to a barely designed frame.

I concur. Trying to follow blender tutorials with a maya-like setup mucks everything up and makes it harder trying to switch, which can ultimately be quite off-putting.
