Mass deportations would not give him any obvious leverage to increase his power or wealth, which is what he cares about. Chaotic, seemingly (but not actually) random and irrational deportations would give him plenty of opportunities to do both.

He does touch on this, when he says that "“Places that used to anchor community life, like libraries and school gyms and union halls, have become less accessible or shuttered altogether". It would have been worthwhile to explicitly mention the economic aspect.

Yes, he did, it's in a long section in the middle of this long article called "This Is Your Politics on Solitude". You may disagree with some, or all, of his conclusions, or think he goes easy on the MAGAs, but he certainly didn't ignore the topic.
