Wind is intermittent, highly variable, and not dispatchable. So it can be only an add-on to other, more reliable sources. And its low density means disproportionate materials and land/sea area requirements along with heavy-duty access roads and powerlines. wind-watch.org
Wind Watch | The facts about wind power, wind energy, wind turbines, wind farms
National Wind Watch raises awareness of the shortcomings of industrial wind energy and its negative impacts on the environment, the economy, and quality of life.

A wind farm subcontractor was engulfed in flames after a power cabinet controlling 33,000 volts he had been working on had mistakenly not been switched off and caused an explosion. The horrific incident left maintenance manager Martin Shaw scarred for life after multiple surgeries on face, chest, neck, scalp, arm and hand injuries. Two of his workmates, David Jackson and Michael Park used fire extinguishers on their colleague and then poured bottled cold water on him until emergency services arrived . . .

The Y Bryn Wind Farm would have seen up to 18 turbines, each rising to 250 metres from base to tip, constructed on the Welsh Government Woodland Estate northeast of Port Talbot. At that scale, the turbines would have been more than twice the height of Swansea’s Meridian Quay Tower, and visible across much of South Wales. A project promising power for thousands of homes Developers Coriolis Energy and ESB argued the scheme could generate enough electricity to power more . . .

Fatal attraction: migratory bats are lured to wind turbine blades #CA
Wind turbines are seen by many as important for global energy production because of their low greenhouse gas emissions. However, for unknown reasons, many migratory bats are colliding with the wind turbine blades, leading to mass die-offs. As vision plays an important role for bats as they fly, often allowing them to avoid obstacles, one thought is that bats are visually attracted to wind turbines, causing them to mistakenly fly towards and fatally collide with the fast-moving blades. This idea . . .

Turbine plan unveiled near wild goat cull site #SCT
An 18-turbine wind farm is being planned on hills where wild goats are being culled near Newcastleton in the Borders. Oxygen Conservation said the goat cull was to preserve habitats – but it has led to campaigners submitting a petition to the Scottish government demanding better protection. Last week, Low Carbon UK revealed it wanted to erect 720ft (220m) turbines on part of the area now owned by Oxygen Conservation – with the closest turbine being less than two miles . . .

Asbestos discovered in lift brake pads at a third Australian wind farm has prompted calls for greater border scrutiny by anti-asbestos advocates. Beijing Jingeng Energy International (Australia) has become the third company to confirm the presence of asbestos in its wind turbine lift brake pads, which are supplied by Chinese company 3S Industry. These standards have been produced to enable the Council to verify that photomontages submitted in support of planning applications and contained with Environmental Statements are accurate and clearly understood depictions of proposals so that the public and decision makers can make informed opinions and decisions. In order that the Council can verify submissions in accordance with the general principles of the Landscape Institute Advice Note 01/09, these standards contain very specific technical requirements and supported technical data. Nairn dropped from plans to park wind farm parts in Moray Firth #SCT
The scale of plans to park parts for floating wind turbines in the Inner Moray Firth have been reduced by more than 60%, its developer has said. Offshore Solutions Group (OSG) had proposed using areas of seabed off Nairn, Culbin and Findhorn as temporary anchorage for foundation base units – large platforms usually made from concrete or metal. The Moray Flow-Park plans have drawn criticism from coastal communities. An area off Nairn has now been scrapped, and OSG said it . . .

Efficient finite difference modeling of infrasound propagation in realistic 3D domains: Validation with wind turbine measurements #SWE
ABSTRACT: We present a high-fidelity simulation tool for accurate acoustic modeling across a wide range of applications. The numerical method is based on diagonal-norm Summation-By-Parts (SBP) finite-difference operators, which guarantee linear stability on piecewise curvilinear multi-block grids. Realistic three-dimensional atmospheric and topographic data are directly incorporated into the simulations, and the solver is implemented in CUDA to achieve high computational efficiency. Verification is performed through convergence studies against highly resolved benchmark problems in both two and three spatial dimensions, while . . .
