"What if people eat *wrong* with #SNAP ?!"

Since people are being very dumb about trying to treat "not going hungry" as a bad thing, here's a snippet from the rough cut of the wacky time travel sci fi zombie film I've been working on, coincidentally tragically perfect for this particular Halloween.

A hurricane's "hiding" between the weather radar coverage. But the lightning sensors are much longer range so you can see a cluster of lightning strikes coming from the storm that's just over the horizon. Very spooky. Like almost detecting a cloaked ship in Star Trek.

It would be really hard to argue that "securing oil" in Kuwait wasn't a goal, given all the iconic historical images of US troops standing in oil fields, keeping them secure, after having fought to secure Kuwait's oil...

Did they do it by accident? Against orders?

Luma is a trendy new "events" website trying to replace (enshittified) Meetup. Two thousand AI events in LA, One thousand Crypto events (and those are completely separate from "Tech") and {checks notes} 48 events for Food and Drink.

So, not really catching the normies crowd yet, I guess.

Fun fact, the State Department, in the middle of a government shutdown where most forms of spending would be illegal as they are not authorized by Congress, is apparently paying to run ads on Reddit. Weird, right?

Google AI trying to "correct" me so I would be writing that the impact of AI has been "significant" rather than "significant harm."

Thanks AI, really improving the clarity of the point I was making, and not at all fucking dystopian bullshit.

Interesting little quirk. Amazon Prime has tons of costumes available for next day delivery... But when you search for Frog costumes, no Frogs are available for next day because they are apparently popular enough to be behind on shipping frogs for all sizes and manufacturers.

A little side story, for the past week the last thing posted to the Kimmel Youtube channel was an interview with the actress Grace Van Patten promoting a show.

One wonders how many people looked up the show because of the controversy and saw her face.

This is interesting. Somebody posted on Reddit's /r/television that they were having difficulties cancelling Hulu.

So, A) Probably a lot of people are cancelling and some system is seeing an unusual traffic spike.

And B) /r/television moderators are deleting the posts about it.

It's interesting how "objectionable decisions made by the company" isn't one of the options to explain why you are cancelling Hulu. I guess "personal reasons" is the closest one.

New rule. If you need to use modal popups to try to force engagement with a feature by preventing engagement with not using that feature, the SEC has to immediately arrest you for fraud if you tell your investors that users are excited about the feature.

Prosecute this. Seriously.

Something something Kirk, something something. You know, when Picard encountered the Nexus in Generations, it felt like Christmas.

I don't think that there's any actual evidence that Trump is dead. But /r/conservative on Reddit is insisting that he's healthy, and I'll believe almost anything that they don't.

Fun bit of Premiere UI trivia. Submix tracks don't have the buttons that a normal audio track does. But the name of the tracks is abbreviated to the same length as a normal track to leave room for hundreds of pixels of absolutely nothing.

I used to bring a spectrophotometer to client sites to calibrate their displays for a validated remote viewing pipeline when I worked in post production. Here's a selfie of me at a client site.

One of the really frustrating things about the AI rush is just how half-assed so many of the features are. It's like "Oh, this will save you so much work" followed immediately by "Here's the brand new kinds of completely manual steps that you need to invent and do to use this in real life."

You ever watch an old TV show set next to a waterfall, old enough that you know they weren't using tons of virtual sets and didn't have access to modern plugins, and find yourself totally taken out of it trying to figure out how they hell they got usable audio.

I still mostly hate the process of editing. It's 10,000 opportunities to judge and nitpick every frame of every creative choice you ever made.

But sometimes I do have to step back and appreciate that this does basically look like a movie. I did okay at stuff like having a consistent color palette.
June 18, 2025 at 6:26 AM
Well that's a stupid fucking design choice.

If I went to a website, no I don't want you to call me. Having a modal overlay I need to dismiss under the assumption that the average website visitor wants a phone call is nuts.

'X' to close the overlay is physically separate so closing it's nonobvious.

When Republicans insist that stuff like OSHA is just too darned burdensome and we need to cut all safety regulation enforcement because nothing bad would actually happen, it's interesting to look at preserved old educational films as a point of reference.

I looked at Twitter. This is what's under Trending there.

And according to Very Serious people, we all need to go back there because it's where the national conversation about events is happening, and awareness suffers for being in the BlueSky bubble.

Marines sent to fight rebellion not trending?🤷‍♂️
