I don't have anything constructive to add, but I wanted to share that this is real and you are not wrong to feel this way. I struggle with this as well. You are not alone.

Like bluesky, the future lies in federation. Matrix isn't perfect but it's improving every day, and no single organization controls it. I think in a couple years it will be the de facto standard chat protocol if they can clean up UX some.
