The more I think about MARTY SUPREME the more I don’t like it.

It sure is interesting that when the Safdies split up, each brother’s first instinct was to make a sports movie that only half works.

Every time somebody asks me what movies have wowed me this year, after I’ve seen a couple hundred movies already, I turn into Indiana Jones’s dad.

Yeah, we only have so many of those. I usually call them lodestones, or load-bearing movies.

If you removed Psycho or Star Wars from the history books, the timeline would no longer make sense. They’d leave huge Psycho and Star Wars-shaped holes in the medium.

NUREMBERG is the kind of historical film that would impress as an 80s/90s TV production, but falls flat when judged as a major motion picture. James Vanderbilt tries to explore the narcissistic insidiousness of fascism but Russell Crowe and Rami Malek are at a loss. The script is slick, not complex.

SENTIMENTAL VALUE is a glorious acting showcase but by the end, I find the story reductive and a little frustrating. Nothing but praise, though, for Stellan Skarsgard, Renate Reinsve, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Elle Fanning. Remarkable performances across the board.

The first 94% of THE FABELMANS is insufferable but the last three scenes - and the final camera tilt - are perfect (and should’ve been released as a short film).

Is it just me or does that teenage Yautja from PREDATOR: BADLANDS look *way* too much like Rawhead Rex…?
