@dagscott.bsky.social picked Napoleon and on one hand that seems great, on the other I don't trust IMAX with a shifted ratio lol

(I avoided prioritizing sound too much because I think IMAX spaces tend to sound pretty bad.)

More seriously, the prompt was very unspecific about what kind of IMAX they're talking about; tall-ratio IMAX 70-compatible rooms, or just anyplace IMAX branded (I suspect they mean the latter).

It's not that THE BIG TRAIL is a masterpiece or anything, and it has some distinctly problematic aspects, but I can't stress enough how cool and weird Walsh's use of the Grandeur format in it is if you're at all familiar with how most movies from the late 20s-early 30s looked.

I think we will, but it'll be like that game — a publisher-outlier that sneaks in and explodes in interest and popularity despite nobody really expecting it. Who knows when though.

(This has happened over a period of decades in every art form whose media have mainstream mass appeal)

I think there’s a mix here. Large publishers and their marketing teams have an interest in conditioning audiences to appreciate the familiar and comfortable and balk strongly at friction, because it allows them to manufacture “safe” designs for their games. Audiences are unconsciously conditioned.

this like intuitive impulse that "if a game is not preparing you to play every other game on the shelf it is wasting your time or impeding you"

MELEE just has an unbelievably great combo system that gives you reason to be actively engaged and thoughtful and adaptive throughout virtually any combo, and it's wild how other action games — especially single-player ones — just don't even try to borrow from that. From that POV, combos DO suck.

Yeah, reactions of people I’ve spoken to or discovered seem split from my POV, so I’m going with the one that has the more immediately appealing flavour of 1cc hehe

Awwwww
November 26, 2025 at 8:16 PM
Thanks; it sounds like 1 is closer to what I’m looking for in a 1cc rn!
November 26, 2025 at 7:03 PM
How would you say it compares to GHOSTS N GOBLINS as a 1cc? (Considering making that one my next old school 1cc)

Caillois of Man, Play, Games fame described this natural desire for evaluation that stems from the competitive nature of skill based games. 11 years before Pong.

Sounds about like what I expected. Ah well. I guess with NINJA GAIDEN 4 getting good reviews we're probably stuck with heavy suck to target being the norm for a while.
