When David Duke ran for governor of Louisiana in 1991, newspapers and television stations ran photos of Duke in Klan robes and wearing a swastika armband. Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush cut ads telling Republicans not to vote for Duke. The majority of white Louisianans voted for him anyway.
