Squirrel of the day! This is Winston, our educational ambassador. He came in fall of 2023 as a baby, partially paralyzed from falling out of his tree. He is not releasable due to limited mobility in his back legs and tail, which makes him a fall risk - but he’s gotten great at getting around.

Please accept this offer of cute wild babies as an interruption to your doom scroll today.

It’s self care, and we all need that today.

Over 400,000 Americans died fighting the horrors of fascism in WWII—now we have Trump henchmen mimicking a Nazi salute? It’s a disgusting insult to their sacrifice and a chilling sign of where we’re headed.

BOGO on today’s Squirrel of the Day! Did you know groundhogs are classified as ground squirrels?
Meet sisters Fiona and Flower, spring 2024 babies. This picture is shortly before they went into hibernation under my front porch! Cant wait to see them again in spring ❤️ #squirreloftheday #groundhog

Daily does of squirrel 🐿️

This is a baby red squirrel with alopecia. I’ve had 4 of these bald cuties in the last 2 years and while there isn’t much research on the condition, it appears to be caused by a combination of genetics + malnutrition. All 4 of my naked reds went on to grow lovely coats!

Snail of the day?
This is Tamatoa, an exceptionally cute rabbit snail.

Today’s squirrel of the day is Cookie! Cookie came into rehab after going for a swim in her finder’s pool.
She got her name for being the sweetest chip I’ve ever met - usually they get horror movie names for being extra spicy visitors 🥲

Daily dose of squirrel!

This is Kratos, one of last years spring babies. He broke into someone’s garage and got his name for being extra brave and growl-y… but he turned out to be the sweetest boy. He has since been returned to wild ❤️🐿️

Did you know that *most* red-tailed hawks tested show positive for secondary rodent poisoning?

Did you know that half of the world’s raptor species are in decline?

Rat poison is ecologically devastating *and* it just leads to more rats. #raptorsaretheanswer

I was scrolling through this year’s wild baby pics and found this one of my sweet little chonker, Rocky, on his happy release day. Look at those healthy growing boy rolls!

He’s fully grown now and living as a free boy but I can always tell it’s him when he visits based on cute doughiness alone 😃

I had the pleasure of caring for 136 wild visitors this year. There were some really tough loses this year, but they were balanced out by a lot of healthy animals happily returned to wild. So lucky to do this work, even when it’s really hard ❤️

Danny Zuko is a squirrel that came in last summer (with his sister Sandy) because he was following his finders asking for help. Turns out he was just s city squirrel chasing people down for treats 👀
He now lives happily on my property where he harasses me for nuts daily.

Thankful, grateful, blessed for post release check ins from America’s Most Handsome Marsupial™️, Scout.
Happy Thanksgiving from the both of us, and all of the other critters here!

Ever wonder why squirrels are turning over their nuts for a few seconds after picking one up? They can tell by weight, look, and smell whether or not it’s spoiled, has mold or bugs inside!

This is my favorite release, Klaus, checking over his walnut to make sure I gave him a good one 🥲

It’s getting holly and jolly over here at Wild Side! Here’s a throw back pic to sweet little Klaus as a baby last year ❤️
He’s since been released but visits me daily still, and out of the many squirrels who have stayed here, he is my all time best fluffy boy.

This little sweetie is Mr. Tippy Toes. He was brought to me a month ago as a late fall orphan and will be here all winter, with a release in spring. We have 2 other late babies here to keep him company while he grows ❤️

This little guy had quite the night! He was picked up by a red tail hawk, but during the get away the hawk dropped him… then was hit by a car 😳
Amazingly, they both came out of the ordeal pretty much okay! Hawk is with a raptor rehabber to be treated for minor head trauma

Spring babies are arriving over here! This is Hazel, she and her brother were found in someones wall!
We also have a younger baby, Tiny Tim, who will be their foster brother through release day 💕
March 13, 2024 at 3:17 PM
I got the boys a ball pit to play in (keeping teenage squirrels entertained inside all winter is HARD) and Ben has tasted them all just to triple make sure that they’re not actually fun colored apples.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Fred got everyone roses… but then he accidentally ate them all 💕🌹🐿️
February 14, 2024 at 8:51 PM
Freddy Spaghetti and Winston! Winston is a non-releasable squirrel who lost function in his back legs as a baby. He regained most movement but not all and struggles climbing.

Fred (bottom) had head trauma from a tree fall but has recovered well and can be released this spring! 🙌

This is Cookie! The world’s sweetest chipmunk. Usually they are tiny demons, but she is the best girl.
She found her way into a swimming pool and was saved by an animal lover and brought to me last summer.
She recovered perfectly and was released in fall but still visits me often!

Hi! New here. I’m Jes, a wildlife rehabber in western NY.
This is Klaus, one of the several squirrels that are crashing with me over winter.

Follow for more squirrely content. And also an influx of baby bunny pictures come spring… sprinkled with a few soap box conservation moments.
