Our acoustic equipment was sabotaged—twice—and we couldn’t figure out who was behind it. Bears, deer, raccoons…all expected. But I didn’t imagine a battle with THIS contender! On the third setup, we turned to find a herd of cows had snuck up on us—watching, strategizing, waiting to thwart us again!

On a hot day during a rabies project, we sedated a hefty raccoon. Next to it, I spotted what looked like a strip of plastic, and absentmindedly pressed my glove on it. A deer fly landed on my cheek. Instinct kicked in—I slapped myself with full force. Ended up with a three-foot tapeworm draped across my face.

After weeks in Leuser’s monsoons and unforgiving wilderness, instant noodles felt like heaven—until a teammate’s 20-day-old red briefs, drying over the fire, plunged straight into the pot. We argued: dignity or survival? Hunger won. We ate the noodles, broth and all, then broke into laughter.

My last night in the Amazon turned surreal: my ear began tickling, then hurting. With no hospital for miles, I lay down as the lead entomologist dug into my ear with sharp insect-mounting tweezers. Out came one moth… then another. Ever try to stay still with a marching band going off in your head?

Grossest job? Rescuing California Red-legged Frogs from raw sewage at Point Reyes. At one point, I went in gloveless—hand plunged into warm, gelatinous muck—to grab a frog. A rite of passage for a germaphobic biologist. Rinsed off, they were stunning in their new clean pond.

The good news is, it looks like the hydrophobic membrane beneath the windscreen survived the Red Deer bite so no water will damage the microphone!
