AI consumed as much water as the water bottle industry this year.

It also created as much carbon pollution as New York City, according to a new study.

Good request from my DMs I want to share— here is what YOU can do (including non-feds). We need as many comments as possible!

This is a very consequential rule change, with multiple and significant real world implications.

there really is no alternative to tearing up CBP and ICE root and branch
A US citizen with a learning disability who has just suffered a medical emergency asks a CBP officer for directions outside the emergency room. He ends up detained in an icebox for ten days and has the assistant secretary of DHS lying about him to the public at large. popular.info/p/us-citizen...

This data confirms the political attacks on NSF are esp targeting training the next generation of scientists.

The top 3 divisions with the most terminations are about education, relating to:

1. Research on learning
2. Broadening participation in STEM
3. Engineering education
NEW: Here are the terminated grants by division, from an NSF source. Total is 434, higher than DOGE's claim of 402.
Top 3 divisions:
Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings - 51
Equity for Excellence in STEM - 50
Engineering Education and Centers - 43

Terra nil is of my favorite games I’ve ever played! Immensely satisfying aesthetically and ecologically.
In this video game, you begin with a barren wasteland and use advanced eco-tech—such as wind turbines, soil purifiers, and irrigators—to transform it into a thriving, diverse ecosystem.
This Video Game Prioritizes Restoring An Ecosystem Over Profits
In Terra Nil, a “reverse city-builder,” your goal is to restore a barren wasteland into a thriving ecosystem.

1. In 2025, over 850 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been filed across the United States - the most in US history.

Most bills target transgender people.

The bills have also grown more extreme, reverting drivers licenses, arresting trans people in bathrooms, and more.

I know I shouldn't be surprised anymore, but wtf??

50% of Black and Hispanic women were fired, compared to only 6% of White men.

Among those fired, nearly all (38 of 43) were women, Black, and/or Hispanic.

2x GRFP honorable mention (2023 and 2025), and no more chances to apply. I was preparing myself for not getting the award because I know how competitive it is, but (potentially) not getting it because of attacks on science from a gang of idiots who call themselves a government sucks. so. much.

According to the posted lists for this year, only 1,000 applicants received the GRFP and ~ 3,000 were named honorable mentions. The solicitation stated there would be 2,300 awards, so this is a massive cut. 🧪🔭

This is a devastating cut to graduate students who put so much time and effort into these applications. NSF has funded 2000+ fellowships every year since 2010. Does the proportionate increase in HMs indicates they cut these fellowships after review and shuffled would-be winners to HMs?
🚨 Not a drill: NSF GRFP results are NOW OUT!!!!!

But...good news and bad news.

👍 I'm *thrilled* for the grad students for whom getting this award will be life-changing, esp now.

👎 # of fellowships went down by 51%

(1000 this year vs. 2036 last year)

🧪 NSF GRFP update!

New graduate NSF fellowships will likely be announced this week for the GRFP (see bottom of 🧵 for why).

First off, I'm *very* glad to hear of those going forward, given the otherwise bleak year so far for graduate training.

Some observations... 1/12

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research.

I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.
NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.
