There's always been a struggle between the left and right of the Labour Party, and a particularly nasty hard-right strand has always existed. The difference is that now the hard right has won decisively.
It'll be a pyrrhic victory, though, because they burnt the whole house down to win the battle.

You could argue that the Labour Party should be challenging this constant anti-migrant rhetoric instead of leaning into it.

However, it might be more likely that the hard right faction now leading the party, having crushed their internal opposition, are actually really really enjoying themselves.

Statutory definition of "family" to be introduced. Even though human rights law refuses strictly to define and limit family, in recognition of the infinite variety of human existence and the possibility of change over time. Might not seem important or have much real-world impact but this is Bad.

This passage is key. What will criteria and fee for this new route be? How many refugees are expected to qualify? Some refugees will be unable to work or study and they will be very harshly treated under this plan.
