Yet even when Schedoni has attained the object of his passion he cannot be happy. Schedoni's problem is not that he is contemptuous of, or disbelieving in, domestic happiness in the manner of the eighteenth-century rake. Rather, he is obsessed with it. He "trusted to have equall'd the most High," that is, his older brother, and had hopes he might surpass him in the eyes of the woman they both loved.
Unable to accept second place in anything, he sees in the Vivaldi family a substitute for his original domestic relations, one in which he can have power over their only son, and therefore be "the most High." Having made himself indispensable to them in their need to control their son's marriage choice, he is willing to go as far as committing murder to secure the preeminence he has won in the eyes of this second family. In return, he looks to them for the advancement in
