I almost always finish a book I've started, but 10% of the way through this one - and 900 pages to go - I'm calling it a day.

Speaking of Halifax... at the AK Muzeum, Kraków.

We've had a couple of nights in Krakow on our way home. Missing the camaraderie of @lvkitchen2014.bsky.social , but still on the WhatsApp group! Today we hit Peak Poland: an Independence Day parade, a walk round Wawel Palace, then a concert in a church, ending with a young pianist playing Chopin.

And inside? Haven't had time to visit it properly, but jumping from a Halifax? Vickers Mk3? A LEGO MODEL OF CASSINO?

So here we were, walking to the flat I had booked, on the route I had chosen, when what did we walk past but the Armii Krajowej Muzeum Krakow. My wife may never trust me again!

We are in the process of returning from Lviv just now, and visited the Museum of Totalitarian Terror which includes Janowska camp.
Lucky enough to be in Krakow tomorrow - Independence Day! Pure serendipity.

2/2 Special thanks to Luda for the organisation, and Katya for the love and the fantastic food. And of course all the many Ukrainians who made us so very welcome. The majority of volunteers have either been to the kitchen more than once, or plan to return. We certainly hope to!

1/2 Last day at @lvkitchen2014.bsky.social I'm sad to be leaving so many lovely people. The Kitchen does great work, providing up to 40,000 meals a week as well as raising funds for other equipment such as tourniquets.
Please support it if you can - or even head out to Lviv yourself.

Second last day @lvkitchen2014.bsky.social today. We've met so many wonderful volunteers. They've been interesting, extremely well travelled, from a wide range of countries, and a whole lot of fun. It's been great working with everyone: I am honoured to have been here.

Another alternative that volunteers do if they're tired of peeling veg at @lvkitchen2014.bsky.social is camo netting. There are several different locations including libraries and churches. I've heard some describe it as meditative, but others don't enjoy it so much.

Took a day off from @lvkitchen2014.bsky.social today and had a walk round Lviv. It's a modern city but can still catch you out. The music of Harry Potter is being played at the Opera; I had a lovely lunch; and I stumbled across the "Museum of Totalitarian Terror".

Another day at @lvkitchen2014.bsky.social. It's not all admiring the flowers and peeling a few spuds (though we did manage a dozen crates). We loaded large sacks of potatoes in one van, and unloaded carrots from another, as well as miscellaneous dry goods from a third!

3- It's easy to see why an early fighter for Ukrainian independence, especially one who can be said to have been martyred by Russia, might be celebrated now. But he was also a violent man who did terrible things. Perhaps it would be better if his statue, like so many others, were now covered up.

2/ Before 1939 his group murdered the Polish prime minister (Western Ukraine was part of Poland at the time) and during the war murdered both Poles and Jews. However after 1945 he lived in West Germany and led Ukrainian resistance to the USSR. He was murdered by the KGB in 1959...

1/ After a couple of hours at @lvkitchen2014.bsky.social today I had to go to the station and saw the impressive statue to Stepan Bandera. His red and black flags are quite common in Lviv, less so in the East, I believe. He is a divisive figure who sided with the Germans in the Second World War...

1/ After work at @lvkitchen2014.bsky.social today we went to the launch of a book about the experience of people with disabilities in the Ukraine. The title "Istorya ne bez nas" might be loosely (and no doubt badly) translated as "No History without Us".

@lvkitchen2014.bsky.social has been putting a lot of effort into a new location. Floors have been laid, equipment is being moved, as have some of the vegetables currently at the original site.
The new storage shed (built by volunteers) features a lovely salvaged door!

2/2 Museums in Ukraine have more to worry about than most. Within two weeks of the full-scale invasion the work began to triage all museums depending on the level of risk.
To lighten the mood, no matter where we go, we are reminded of the tasks set at @lvkitchen2014.bsky.social

1/2 This Sunday we visited the Lviv Folk Architecture Museum. Examples of houses outbuildings and churches from the late 18th Century onwards, set in a beautiful woods.
Meanwhile the ladies of @lvkitchen2014.bsky.social were raising money through the sale of cakes and other goods.

So last night we did something I didn't expect when we signed up for @lvkitchen2014.bsky.social - we went to the Opera to see "The Cossacks in Exile". The whole production was first class. The orchestra played the national anthem, and the audience replied #SlavaUkraini #HeroyamSlava
