The plaintiffs argue that SB1 warrants heightened scrutiny because
it relies on sex-based classifications. But neither of the above classifi-
cations turns on sex. Rather, SB1 prohibits healthcare providers from
administering puberty blockers or hormones to minors for certain med-
ical uses, regardless of a minor’s sex. While SB1’s prohibitions refer-
ence sex, the Court has never suggested that mere reference to sex is
sufficient to trigger heightened scrutiny. And such an approach would
be especially inappropriate in the medical context, where some treat-
ments and procedures are uniquely bound up in sex.

There's a cucumber recipe I really like in Fuschia Dunlop's Every Grain of Rice. Easy way to use a couple cucumbers with stuff you probably have, I think the vinegar is the least common and just about any other vinegar works as a sub in a pinch

SMACKED CUCUMBER IN
GARLICKY SAUCE

This exceptionally quick and easy dish was a favourite of mine at
the now demolished and much-missed Bamboo Bar, a small
restaurant just outside the Sichuan University campus. The serving
girls there, who lodged like sardines in the attic at the top of the
old wooden building, used to mix up the seasonings behind the
counter, taking spoonfuls of garnet-red chilli oil and dark soy
sauce from the bowls in the glass cabinet beside them and tossing
the cucumber in the piquant sauce. The combination of
seasonings, known as ‘garlic paste flavour’ (suan ni wei), is a
Sichuanese classic, with its garlicky pungency and undercurrent of
sweetness: the same sauce may be used to dress fresh broad
beans, thinly sliced cooked pork (perhaps mixed with fine slivers of
carrot and Asian radish), boiled pork dumplings or wontons, and
many other ingredients. You may use sweet, aromatic soy sauce
instead of light soy sauce if you have it in stock.
The cucumber is smacked before cutting to loosen its flesh and
help it absorb the flavours of the sauce. Try not to smash it into
smithereens!
1 cucumber (about 300g)
½ tsp salt
1 tbsp finely chopped garlic
½ tsp caster sugar
2 tsp light soy sauce
½ tsp Chinkiang vinegar

2 tbsp chilli oil
A pinch or two of ground roasted Sichuan pepper, (optional)
Lay the cucumber on a chopping board and smack it hard a few
times with the flat blade of a Chinese cleaver or with a rolling pin.
Then cut it, lengthways, into four pieces. Hold your knife at an
angle to the chopping board and cut the cucumber on the
diagonal into ½–1cm slices. Place in a bowl with the salt, mix well
and set aside for about 10 minutes.
Combine all the other ingredients in a small bowl.
Drain the cucumber, pour over the sauce, stir well and serve
immediately.
VARIATIONS
A sweet-and-sour sauce for smacked cucumber
A lovely variation. Smack, cut and salt the cucumber as in the main
recipe, but dress it with the following seasonings: ½ tsp salt, 1 tbsp
finely chopped garlic, 2 tsp caster sugar, 2 tsp Chinkiang vinegar, 1
tsp light soy sauce and, if you fancy a bit of heat, 2 tbsp chilli oil.
Smacked cucumber with sesame and preserved mustard greens
For a nutty, savoury flavour, smack, cut and salt the cucumber as in
the main recipe, but dress it with the following seasonings: 2 tbsp
Sichuan preserved mustard greens (ya cai), 1 tsp finely chopped
garlic, 1 tbsp runny sesame paste, 1½ tsp clear rice vinegar, 1 tsp
sesame oil and salt to taste.

provided in clause (2) of this subsection, whichever date is
earlier, and any powers or authorities exercised by reason
of said emergency shall cease to be exercised after such
specified date, except that such termination shall not af-
fect—
(A) any action taken or proceeding pending not fi-
nally concluded or determined on such date;
(B) any action or proceeding based on any act com-
mitted prior to such date; or
(C) any rights or duties that matured or penalties
that were incurred prior to such date.
(b) Not later than six months after a national emer-
gency is declared, and not later than the end of each six-
month period thereafter that such emergency continues,
each House of Congress shall meet to consider a vote on
a joint resolution to determine whether that emergency
shall be terminated.
(c)(1) A joint resolution to terminate a national emer-
gency declared by the President shall be referred to the
appropriate committee of the House of Representatives or
the Senate, as the case may be. One such joint resolution
shall be reported out by such committee together with its
recommendations within fifteen calendar days after the
day on which such resolution is referred to such com-
mittee, unless such House shall otherwise determine by
the yeas and nays.
(2) Any joint resolution so reported shall become the
pending business of the House in question (in the case of
the Senate the time for debate shall be equally divided be-
tween the proponents and the opponents) and shall be
voted on within three calendar days after the day on
which such resolution is reported, unless such House shall
otherwise determine by yeas and nays.
(3) Such a joint resolution passed by one House shall be
referred to the appropriate committee of the other House
and shall be reported out by such committee together

pointed and the committee of conference shall make and
file a report with respect to such joint resolution within
six calendar days after the day on which managers on the
part of the Senate and the House have been appointed.
Notwithstanding any rule in either House concerning the
printing of conference reports or concerning any delay in
the consideration of such reports, such report shall be
acted on by both Houses not later than six calendar days
after the conference report is filed in the House in which
such report is filed first. In the event the conferees are un-
able to agree within forty-eight hours, they shall report
back to their respective Houses in disagreement.
(5) Paragraphs (1)–(4) of this subsection (b) of this sec-
tion, and section 502(b) of this Act are enacted by Con-
gress—
(A) as an exercise of the rulemaking power of the
Senate and the House of Representatives, respec-
tively, and as such they are deemed a part of the
rules of each House, respectively, but applicable only
with respect to the procedure to be followed in the
House in the case of resolutions described by this sub-
section; and they supersede other rules only to the ex-
tent that they are inconsistent therewith; and
(B) with full recognition of the constitutional right
of either House to change the rules (so far as relating
to the procedure of that House) at any time, in the
same manner, and to the same extent as in the case
of any other rule of that House.
(d) Any national emergency declared by the President in
accordance with this title, and not otherwise previously
terminated, shall terminate on the anniversary of the dec-
laration of that emergency if, within the ninety-day period
prior to each anniversary date, the President does not
publish in the Federal Register and transmit to the Con-
gress a notice stating that such emergency is to continue
in effect after…

Mao doing a bit about people who like peppers being revolutionaries and liking a silly song about a pepper leading a vegetable insurrection is one of the more humanizing things I have ever read about an Important Historical Figure

Mao's food was the same as everybody's, but being a Hunanese he had the southerner's ai-la, or "love of pepper." He even had pepper cooked into his bread. Except for this passion, he scarcely seemed to notice what he ate. One night at dinner I heard him expand on a theory of pepper-loving peoples being revolutionaries. He first submitted his own province, Hunan, famous for the revolutionaries it has produced. Then he listed Spain, Mexico, Russia, and France to support his contention, but laughingly had to admit defeat when someone mentioned the well-known Italian love of red pepper and garlic, in refutation of his Theory. One of the more amusing songs of the "bandits," incedentally, was a dirty called "The Hot Red Pepper." It told of the disgust of the pepper with his pointless vegetable existence, waiting to be eaten, and how he ridiculed the contentment of the cabbages, spinach, and beans with their invertebrate careers. He ends up leading a vegetable insurrection." The Hot Red Pepper" was a great favorite with Chairman Mao.

Once Ho Lung arrested a Swiss missionary named Bosshard, and a millitary court "sentenced" him to eighteen months' imprisonment for alleged espionage. The Reverend Bosshard's sentence had still not been completed when Ho Lung began the Long March, but he was ordered to move with the army. He was finally released during the march, when his sentence expired, and was given traveling expenses to Yunanfu. Rather to most people's surprise, the Reverend Bosshard brought out few harsh words about Ho Lung. On the contrary he was reported to have remarked, "If the peasants knew what the Communists were like, none of them would run away"

Started reading Edgar Snow's Red Star Over China, I'm only a few chapters in but it's pretty good so far. My favorite early passage is him taking the train and talking with a young guy who says the peasants believe what the communists say
