Every day this week I'm posting a Whit Stillman review; he's touring the UK this week with 35mm prints of his films thanks to Lost Reels. Today, I'm looking at 1994's delightful Barcelona, and nostalgic for a time when America was a respected country abroad. 5/5

I interviewed Whit Stillman last week about Metropolitan, Barcelona, The Last Days of Disco, Damsels in Distress Love and Friendship, and his kinship with the great Scottish director Bill Forsyth. Our conversation and his tour dates for the UK in the article here. film-authority.com/2025/07/20/i...

East Africa has been playing the long game and I for one think it's beautiful
Like Barack Obama Sr. got axed because he was too close to Tom Mboya and got on Jomo Kenyatta's bad side and Kamala's granddad was hanging out with Kenneth Kaunda. We're all living in Season 64 of anti-colonial nationalist East Africa Game of Thrones.
If I had a nickel for every 21st century presidential candidate with close family members who served as highly educated bureaucrats in early post-colonial 1960s East African governments, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened twice

Cheering myself up in the company of the ever delightful Damon Runyon .. As if his Broadway stories weren't wonderful enough, these editions feature sublime illustrations by Nicolas Bentley - the icing on an already delicious cake 👌.

What a joy to see once again The Awful Truth by Leo McCarey, a 1937 screwball comedy starring Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. There is nothing - bar a @whitstillman.bsky.social movie - to touch the elegance, wit and charm of such a gem of American cinema.

Leo McCarey's glorious trifecta: Duck Soup (1933), The Awful Truth (1937), Love Affair (1939).
