On why sticking this logo on plastic packaging has to be in the top 5 greatest filthy lies in human history.

poppy day (War Christmas) frenzy prompted me to finally read All Quiet on the Western Front. I was expecting it to be good, it was even better. War is manmade Hell. Rather than "honour" the soldiers' "sacrifice" (and round up the next generation of victims) we can only rage against their slaughter.

Same vibe

Cutting up the branches from tree pruning, I was pleased by the contrast in brown colours, from red to green. That is all. #gardening

What am I to do with the three cuttlebones I couldn't resist taking from the beach with the excuse that they "might come in useful"? I am neither canary owner nor jewellery maker.

What a wonderful place the Eden Project is. Had a marvellous day 😊 🌿

Crumbs! Time for crumble.

Our apple tree isn't even that big and the harvest is a bit overwhelming. What do people do? Next year a cider press?

Upon further reflection, this flag would also be acceptable #TransLiberation

The only flag I want to see on my lampposts.

To the remaining Labour left, this from @zarahsultana.bsky.social really says it all:

The snowflake right.

If you liked

"You can't say anything these days because of political correctness gone mad, what happened to straight talking common sense calling a spade a spade etc"

you'll love

"Xenophobe is a slur."

"Say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here."

And here we are.

Off to get shouted at by some Nazis. Here goes.

Last week the little one and I bumped into one of these handsome toads in the chazza shop and couldn't resist taking him home. Then this week we met the other, even more handsome, toad on a wonderful afternoon out at @nationaltrust.org.uk Quarry Bank. (Didn't take that one home, obvz)

Can't believe @metro.co.uk has axed the cryptic crossword, with a crappy promo in its place. There goes the only reason to pick up a copy, with the possible exception of padding plates and glasses when you pack up to move house.

That building in the background is Manchester Art Gallery, home to this 1877 painting of the nearby Royal Exchange. It shows the faces of the captains of Industrial Revolution capital and empire who profited from slavery, opium wars and colonisation. Fuck them and their empire.

Stop starving Gaza! Pots and pans for Palestine, making noise and blocking main roads in central Manchester tonight.
August 1, 2025 at 6:43 PM
No-one cares.

Stop arms exports to Israel, stop banning Palestine solidarity protests, expel the Israeli ambassador, then we'll talk.

Pathetic that even this token gesture other states are using to avoid looking too complicit in genocide is too much for Starmer without excuses, delays and caveats.
July 29, 2025 at 4:16 PM
Reading Walter Benjamin's theses on history, and Michael Löwy's exegesis of it. How else to make sense of a genocide playing out in broad daylight?

Lots of bad things and scary things going on so please enjoy this picture of a strawberry. #gardening

Seed collecting under the trees along the brook, picking black claws off skeletal umbels for (what I think is) cow parsley, and pouring mini-ball-bearing grains out of dainty papery cups for scarlet champion. The little one enjoyed shaking the seed tubs as rattles.

Met some beautiful insects in the garden yesterday evening. Mostly tiny bejewelled things too small and fast to snap, but this gorgeous moth (a scarlet tiger, I think? We're well outside the range the book gives for it though!) was enough even for my phone camera.

Really enjoyed Taking Flight by @levparikian.bsky.social . Science and #naturewriting at its most douglasadamsian, to help you get your insect -ptera straight and appreciate just how different bats (and pterosaurs) are from birds (and each other)
