Intro: 👋🏻 I’m a geologist working on my MS in 🌎 Sciences at UNC-Charlotte. My thesis is on landslides in the Uwharrie Mountains. My areas of interest are post wildfire landslides, soils & rock fracturing. On the side I’m a mom to 4. I work for an energy research firm soil corrosion research.
And the people I know, including family members, will still look the other way and complain that ppl can’t agree to disagree anymore.

Even though I’m Jewish, I love Christmas. But the past several years it lost its luster. I think it always seemed a time where people were better…nicer. I guess accepting the reality after the past few elections, that a good chunk of ppl in this country are truly horrible ppl, ruined that illusion.

I had to explain how an algorithm worked to a relatively young Gen Xer and their boomer parent recently, and this type of internet illiteracy is a big issue. Millions of people with no clue on how the internet(and the harmful echo chambers they can produce) actually works is scary.

I got hit by a wave of nausea realizing this. The way they’re getting ready to go after immigrants, trans people, and spend out the ass to do so, please prepare for things to get really, really ugly soon.
It took me a bit of wondering why a man who says he wants to cut govt spending by trillions, to the extent that he’s created an entire dept for Musk, is demanding the debt ceiling be eliminated?? Then I remembered the huge costs associated w/mass deportations & I realized how insidious this is.

I have a whole theory on this that revolves around the myth of “white exceptionalism”. Over the past 50 years, things like college education, home ownership, white collar careers, things that were previously reserved for white men, became the norm. Women, POC, etc can now participate.
The "problem" arose when higher ed came to be seen by the public and by (at least some) policymakers as an engine of equality--and not just as finishing school for the sons of wealthy White families. That's when it became a threat to elite wealth and power.
I will never stop being aghast that the United States built a higher education system that was literally the envy of the entire world—our bitterest political enemies nonetheless sent their children to us to be educated, it was so good—& then just decided to systematically, ruthlessly dismantle it

There is a very long list of corporations still very much in existence today, from Bayer to BMW to Chase, who worked with Nazis, even medically tested on Jews or used forced labor from prisoners of concentration camps. Modern corporations will absolutely stoop to anything if they can make $$.
