"You there. I need you to suck."

"No, YOU suck!"

"No, that's not what I... <sigh>"

"In fact, slightly more rowdy. Just... of a different sort of rowdy."

"Well, small victories, I guess."

My child (who was five at the time) once ran quickly past me in the living room while saying, "I made bad decisions!"

I was suddenly very invested in their activities.

No, that can't be true! It's...

I think in this metaphor, OpenAI is selling shovels at a loss to sell their shovel-selling business by showing how good they are at selling shovels.

NVidia is happily just actually making the shovels and supplying the shovel-sellers.

In a gold rush, the people making money are the people selling shovels.

There will be people who strike it rich in mining. But the people selling shovels are _guaranteed_ money if they just sell you the idea that you will be one of them.

I will always know how to spell Yttrium.

... Not, admittedly, the most useful takeaway from a childhood experience, but there it is anyway.

Door canvassing? In 2025? Prepare to get yelled at for showing up and somebody's door unannounced.

I think this specific aspect of the argument falls to tragedy of the commons- it is easy to make the case that the overall economy is better, but hard for any individual company/individual to see the benefit.

Because individuals aren't rewarded by improving the rate of exchange of goods.

I agree with the caveat that if the way it doesn't matter is _incredibly annoying_ it can lead to hilarity.

Launchpad McQuack is an insanely capable pilot that can fly anything, but can't land. But any crash never hurts the passengers. He works for a billionaire who can afford to replace planes.

What... style of massage are they advertising?

... I'm not sure I trust their massage if they use _either_ "gentle" or "deep".

If they are just offering backrubs, I might be okay with it.
