i'd go even further and say there is a reason even nixon kept this kind of stuff to himself. you would have to go back quite a bit to find a point at which is acceptable for a president to say anything like this *in public*, to say nothing of in the oval office.
I don’t want to be pollyannish about the past, but it was basically inconceivable twenty years ago that a president would say this publicly
Trump: "It’s a hellhole right now. And those Somalians should be out of here. They've destroyed our country. And all they do is complain, complain, complain. You have her. She’s always talking about the Constitution provides me with – go back to your own country and figure out your constitution."

I think we should’ve pushed back against this arrested development approach to “sensitive subjects” in the 2010s. People have to act like adults around exposure to shit they don’t wanna see. They can’t confuse their icky and uncomfy feelings with “
censorship is okay”
maybe a hot take but I can absolutely see why bluesky doesn’t want to permit what equates to rape porn for most people. it’s a sensitive subject for a lot of people. reddit still exists.

And even then the kinkiness is like 'oo, we put play handcuffs on her ooo'.

So much of it feels like people writing about sex, but who are very uncomfortable about sex.

A lot of them just have boring sex scenes tbh. There's rarely any understanding of what makes something sexy and they're generally vanilla as hell.

every time I watch a criticism of romantasy novels, it essentially boils down to "this kink is bad because i dont understand it" rather than idk... some of the actual issues with romantasy??

Most of us simply do not have the time or resources to dive into rigorous study for every little thing we want to capture - we make conscious and unconscious decisions of what deserves that degree of focus, and that's only our business
I just find it fun to talk about

We don't know what we don't know, and that's why art is so much learning and studying and problem solving - every new first opens a greater doorway to more study and understanding.
I think that's cool!
After a certain level of skill, most of your decisions become about your own taste.

And listen, we make value judgements with every part and piece. It's okay to decide "I don't care enough about this saddle to make sure I'm putting it in the right spot, with the proper accompanying tack, with the right stirrups, etc"
That's okay!

What is anatomically, physically correct is not always aesthetically pleasing and vice versa

It's not enough to look at the reference, you have to study it, try to understand it, and potentially look deeper into The Thing to understand *why* it looks the way that it does.

Not only are photos not always true to life, they can often capture and distort in ways you might not realize
And sometimes photos are true to life but capture something buckwild that isn't aesthetically pleasing or even recognizable

One of my first lessons under my favorite teacher was to bring in photos and artworks that we felt exemplified good anatomy
Then he broke down how to identify Good References
Not every photo or old masterwork is a viable reference - you need to be able to source the correct information you need

You see knotted armpits and backwards legs and twisted necks because while you can look at something on a surface level, you may not be understanding the mechanics of the thing beneath the visible flesh

Those components may as well be meaningless. A person who's never handled or studied a gun isn't going to understand how its parts depend on one another to create the whole if they don't break away from just looking at it to instead study, properly study
This applies to anatomy too of course

It's not about people NOT looking at references
It's about people not *understanding* their reference
You can look at a gun, a car, a saddle, a costume and see it, sure. You can identify the shapes and the visual components.
But if you're not taking the time to research it, to break it down-

I've been thinking lately of a post that circled about a few weeks ago in which an artist expressed frustration at guns being drawn improperly ie stock and barrel not being aligned properly
Their judgement of the situation was that people weren't looking at references
But it's a different problem

It's funny how the photo ID verification for porn thing has seeped into general chitchat, even got my aunt saying "for god's sake let them have porn, they're getting it anyway"

Few things are funnier than explaining to teens and twenty-somethings what we considered safe and acceptable back in the 1970s.

The context was how during a field trip to Stratford, I, a bearded but underage teen, ordered a bottle of wine for my table of smooth-faced underage teen companions

If people are allowed to change sex at will - legally, medically, socially - then the state's ability to enact sex discrimination falls apart. And conservatives REALLY REALLY WANT TO ENACT SEX DISCRIMINATION
