It's thought the spots are an adaptation to trick scale insects or other pests into thinking the plant is already occupied, so the insects move on to a plant that has more food and space available for them.

Thank you. I've liked them for years but didn't start growing them until a few months ago. They're hardy outside where I live but I'm keeping them inside for now. My older ones have done well indoors.
