The Sketchbook Chronicles: Blueshift

She has no mouth, vertical line eyes cheerfully looking to the right of the image, two shiny, glasslike orbs which sit on her head in a manner similar to Mickey Mouse's ears, and what appears to be a closed flap of some kind on her cranium. Her body is largely featureless. Her torso, pelvis, and legs are all segmented from each other, and her joints are all orbs. One hand is on her hip, and one hand is pointing at herself with her thumb. A sketchbook drawing of King Dedede, hunched over, unenthusiastically dragging Kirby along the floor. It is colored, albeit only in pencil. A drawing of 02 upside-down with its eye closed and leaking blood is visible on the top right.

Now, he DOES seem to call out anti-DEI grifters in a tweet that was omitted from this post, but I must admit it doesn't make his wording in the follow-up seem much better given its pretty direct insinuation that games having diversity when they otherwise wouldn't is agenda-based and bad.

And if it weren't for that then anti DEI grifters wouldnt have a place in the hobby. And visuals are just at a weird spot in the industry currently. We have the most advanced technology available but companies are doing weird things with them for expediency sake and that creates discussion. One day all of this will get ironed out and online discussion will shift. Maybe for the better or maybe towards the new problem we get faced with. But it wont be these three things forever. Im sure of it.

The Ground Pound has an airstall to it, but after that, the characters descend quickly. I think this aspect is fine since, unlike the Butt Bounce, the Ground Pound is not also meant to be a movement tool. Unfortunately, the Butt Bounce in the Re-Pac games have both an airstall AND a slow fall speed.

I think the game could've been so much better, and grander. And could have less technical issues. Pac-Man World 1 deserved better than it got, too.

I don't think what the game gets wrong is defensible. I don't know how one could excuse the lazy modeling and texturing and sound design.
A ledge from the end of Canyon Chaos in World 2 Re-Pac. It features an incredibly sharp, inorganic corner going along the length of it. Grass is growing on it, making the unnatural corner seem even stranger. The platforms rising out of the bottomless pit are long rectangular prisms. The image features three annotations. They read: "what even is this corner, man. come on" "why is this wall flatter than paper." "why are these just boring squares now." The same ledge from the original Pac-Man World 2. The ledge is instead depicted as being a slight overhang sitting on layers of organic-looking rock rather than a completely flat, sheer cliff. The platforms rising out of the bottomless pit are far more organic spires of rock. The entire image is more colorful.

Even Really Rolling Hills, the level which I imagine is the poster child, for many, of how generic 3D World is, executes the "boring" grass theme better than World 2 Re-Pac, in my opinion...

Just look at this! Tell me it doesn't have more style than World 2 Re-Pac (and NSMB)!

This isn't even mentioning its genuinely phenomenal soundtrack, which is almost all done live. NEITHER Re-Pacs stand up to their originals in this department, so of course they don't hold a candle to 3D World's.

A wooden platform from the end of Canyon Chaos in World 2 Re-Pac. It is a large, perfect wooden cube with a perfect wooden slab sitting on it. They are relatively untextured. It sits in the middle of a large patch of dead grass, which itself sits in a large field of dry, desaturated, relatively untextured grass. The top of the Re-Pac version of the wooden platform from the end of Canyon Chaos. Viewed from above, it is a perfect, flat square with textures that look as though they were carved into a solid-colored square of clay. The same platform, but from the original Pac-Man World 2. The wooden part is textured, uneven, and visibly made of distinct wooden planks. It sits atop an organic-looking pillar of rock with a vine growing on it. The entire image is an order of magnitude more saturated than the Re-Pac version, and with more color variety. The grass is not mostly untextured. A dirt path goes from the pillar to off-screen. The top of the wooden platform from the original Pac-Man World 2. The wooden planks are distinct, uneven, greatly textured, and have nails on their ends. Grass is poking out from between several planks.

The passion and effort seep out of every corner of this game. In comparison to the original Air Ride, this game is larger than life. Meanwhile, in Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac, many elements are now smaller - sometimes literally.
The titular pond of Pac-Dot Pond from World 2 Re-Pac. The waterfall is small enough that it looks as though it could be scaled with a Super Butt-Bounce. It cannot. There is an invisible wall. The original pond of Pac-Dot Pond. The waterfall is absolutely huge, even slightly going off the top of the screen. Faint atmospheric fog fills the level, adding to the sense of scale.

This is Marcy. She is an odd little creature who lives alone in the strange area containing the border between life and death. She doesn't know how she got there, or if she's even alive herself. She is kind to all passersby... or, she would be, if anyone ever showed up.

Like... I dunno... personally, I feel like the one on the right is ten times more menacing and cinematic than the one on the Left...

...And that's aside from all the other issues the new opening has compared to the original's.

My wife and I have a whiteboard in our kitchen. We meant to use it to write important reminders on (and sometimes we do), but we mostly just draw on it.

In the top-left corner are doodles of Toadette and Light-Blue Yoshi as Wubbas (though there is no way to tell it is Light-Blue Yoshi specifically given it is all only drawn with a black marker). They are drawn as though they are traveling along the frame of the whiteboard with Light-Blue Yoshi going along the corner and collecting three Mini Flower Coins. In the top-right corner is Wario, encased in a bubble. Lines are emanating from him, which can be interpreted as either shines or him speeding up into the atmosphere. In the center is large text drawn inside a speech bubble which reads: "RULES #1 - NO DANCE BATTLES and max (you will kill yourself)" The speech bubble is coming from a Talking Flower who is flying in the air on the center far-right of the white board. Sitting on a pedestal in the center-right behind and between the hippo and Birdetta is a silly-looking Pikachu, just standing there with a dopey smile. All the characters are standing together on a grassy field.
