Skate laces remain the industry standard.

In this case, the strap loops through the frontmost hole in the blade holder, and is very loose. It slides through as the pad rotates on the leg and foot, ideally providing no resistance to the rotation at all. Its purpose it to keep the bottom of the pad from separating from the slate completely.
