With the Chapel carefully disassembled and stored, we are ready to rebuild the Chapel as soon as we secure the prospective new site and raise rebuilding funds.
This is just one of hundreds of details that will contribute to preserving our National Historic Landmark for generations to come.

Wayfarers is working closely with the city of Rancho Palos Verdes to secure an appropriate new site that closely matches the topography of our original site. If we are successful, when we reassemble the chapel, the stonework will again be visible.

Also note how the PV Stone walls were visible from the road in all directions, and how the tower foundation draped down the hillside, rooting the structure in the hill. Unfortunately, this stonework was hidden for decades by bushes and trees.

If necessary, the new campus project will be done in phases again, rebuilding the chapel itself in a first phase so we can reopen ASAP.

The blue terra cotta roof tile was selected to match the blue sky following the architect’s desire to use only natural colors.

Once built, the tower, clad in local Palos Verdes stone, was meant to be visible while the sanctuary would blend into the grove of trees intended to grow up around it. Sailors using the Catalina channel at night had dubbed the floodlit tower “God’s Candle.”

Lloyd Wright conceived it as a “hallelujah” tower, with wings and a sense of soaring, like upraised hands holding the cross on high. The gold cross was 60 feet above the floor of the Chapel.

These species help: Knit the soil together; Slow surface water runoff; Aesthetically pleasing to the eye from the drive. We partnered with engineers and environmental consultants to move soil away from the road, keep the mature trees, their root systems and native shrubs.

Architect Lloyd Wright envisioned the prayer as flowing outward from the altar—out into the congregation and the greater world. By intentionally leaving the prayer unfinished, Wright symbolized its continuation in the lives of those who depart from the Chapel, carrying faith into their daily walk.
