Hourly matching without additionality (what’s currently included in the GHGP Scope 2 proposal) has little to no impact on emissions reductions.

The biggest opportunity?

Decarbonizing the power sector, which is the number one source of carbon emissions globally.

At scale, Climate TRACE data show this could reduce global emissions by 9 gigatonnes.

🚙EV Charging in particular is making waves with this technology, demonstrating the potential to reduce grid emissions from charging by up to 90% on individual days.

Thanks to our incredible partners, some of the largest tech companies have deployed this emissions-slashing technology, resulting in less pollution from the electricity consumption of internet-connected devices like smart phones, thermostats, EV chargers, and more.

Last year, Akamai, Teradyne, & Wayfair joined forces as a part of the consortium, teaming up to enable the development of the 135 MW Prairie Solar project in Champaign County, Illinois.

⚡️The project will cause 130,000 tonnes of carbon emissions to be avoided annually, by producing 300,000 MWh/year.

So, what good does that do?

Akamai is able to use that real-time marginal emissions data to more accurately report its operational emissions AND optimize operations by scheduling energy-intensive tasks during periods when cleaner energy sources may otherwise go to waste.

Using regional grid and marginal #emissions data, you can now estimate the avoided emissions impact of any new solar, wind, nuclear, or geothermal project using the freely available Carbon Treasure Map. carbontreasuremap.org

Say it louder for the people in the back: GHG accounting standards should measure actual emissions induced and avoided, not just provide an agreed-upon way to assign blame — one that doesn’t effectively drive decisions that reduce more emissions.
June 25, 2025 at 8:44 PM
Our new analysis shows that, if the GHG Protocol mandates local-only hourly matching (24/7) for Scope 2 accounting, it would effectively kill corporate clean energy procurement, slowing global emissions progress by 42+ million tonnes per year.

March 2025 emissions data from @climatetrace.org are out. Power, the highest-emitting sector, saw emissions rise 0.2% year over year, reaching a global total of 1.3Bt CO2e.

We analyzed the real-world balance of Meta’s data center induced and avoided carbon emissions. The resulting case study made one thing very clear: matching megawatt hours doesn’t capture an accurate picture of emissions impacts.
June 4, 2025 at 6:32 PM
As it turns out, the lesser-known GHGP Project Protocol already provides a way for companies to report consequential emissions, rooted in real-world emissions impacts. We’ve combed through that tedious framework to write up a straightforward “how to” guide for using it.

Nearly 2M Americans’ health is on the line with an increased risk in premature death from heightened levels of PM2.5 pollution caused by Bitcoin mining in the US.

Those pollution levels are concentrated in NYC, Houston, Austin, Northeast Texas, and the Illinois/Kentucky border.

The #Bitcoin mines studied used 33% more electricity than the city of Los Angeles within one year.

85% of that #electricity use was powered by fossil fuels.
