Well obviously not all closers have been top performers. By definition. But some are, every year. My point is simply that Hoffman hasn't been a top performer, or really even an upgrade on Romano. He was supposed to fulfill that role.

It was a different era, I understand, but Willie Hernandez did not shit the bed on the regular for the '84 Tigers. Tom Henke and Duane Ward were money game in and out for the Jays in the early 90s. Mariano Rivera was Mariano Rivera. Hoffman has been very meh.
