As they moved deeper into town, the street narrowed, the houses growing closer together. Between the brightly painted fences, the blooming flowers, and the icicle-shaped marker at the corner of the street, the place looked so idyllic. Like nothing bad could ever happen here. Then Bariq spotted the toppled cart. It lay on its side, one wheel still spinning lazily, the baskets it had carried scattered across the road. A picture like that usually called for a bit of sound, such as some aging townee admonishing the cart’s much younger driver for their incompetence while the latter murmured apologies and cited plausible reasons for distraction. But the street was empty and quiet, save for… “Now what the fuck is that?” Bariq muttered, resting his palm instinctively on the hilt of his trusty two-hander.

His mind was already slipping into the comforting numbness of repetition. The motions were mechanical: handling the kindling, chopping, boiling water, stirring. He didn’t have to think about it, didn’t have to feel. Not even when hot water splashed on the back of his hand, leaving his skin red and ready to blister. It was fine to just grunt and ignore it.

“The Emperor?” Dojar asked, confused. His mind flicked through the list of the world's actual rulers, but that didn’t make sense here. Any of those mighty people could get away with causing havoc in Shchur for sure, but he couldn’t imagine why any of them would want to. “Which Emperor?” Salik shot him a look, eyebrows raised. “Not _an_ emperor. _The_ Emperor. The one who strolled oh so leisurely into the Watch and demanded we work for him, surely you’ve heard? The one who's supposedly untouchable? There’s a rumor that the Raindrain’s one of his bases of operation.” “Ah.” Dojar had indeed heard of the man—a crime lord who’d emerged on the scene after the whole sordid business with Pestilence, while Dojar was busy studying the bottoms of the gutter. He hadn’t realized the guy was still around, stabbing his way through the streets. The city had its fair share of short-lived legends; the Emperor, at the beginning, had sounded like yet another one.

This one's from MTWNK, the "D&D adventure meets romcom meets eldritch horrors" book I'm having so much fun editing now. Can't wait to let all these disaster queers out into the world eventually.
“The White Wings, unlike you, are no misfits. Whatever task I give them, they tackle it with flawless determination and deliver exactly what’s been ordered. They earn their keep. They make the collateral damage worth it, so maybe take a page out of their book once you’re done swallowing your jealous tongue.” Rinouk didn’t see Vezee’s reaction to that. They were too busy looking down at their own fingers, clenched white-knuckled over the edge of the table. *Imagine a basin filled with the clearest water*. It wasn't working. They didn’t know much about the task referenced, or about the Wings themselves. Just a few campsite whispers about that other group of adventurers, the ones favored by their shared supervisor to the point that he’d given them an actual pretty name. Not like this party, whom he’d kept calling a Band of Misfits until it stuck, rejecting all applications for a better moniker.

Vel watched the veins and muscles bulge under his damp bronze skin, counted his breaths, squinted at the glittering reflection of the torch on Bariq’s sword. Swatted away stray, unwelcome thoughts of their past and how the entire town used to gossip about them. What did it matter now?
