Thank you @rokhanna.bsky.social for raising awareness about Trump’s lopsided America Last China “trade deal.” Yes to a Manhattan Project on rare earths. The minerals are not so rare as far as where they are located, but they require intense processing. We must improve/stand up that capacity.

Please share your theory: Why did Trump announce beef 🥩and tomato🍅tariff cuts when 99% of US🍅imports and 42% of🥩are from Mexico or Canada and ALREADY DUTY FREE under USMCA? Argentine beef is another 25% import share and ALREADY HAD TARIFFS CUT. So why cut PHANTOM TARIFFS? 1/

And POTUS again shreds his lawyer's key claim in SupCrt tariff case:

Trump SolGen Sauer 11/5 - "These are regulatory tariffs. They are not revenue-raising tariffs.... The tariffs would be most effective, so to speak, if no -- no -- no person ever paid them."

Good thread about supreme court arguments RE: Trump tariff power over reach case.
And, with that, the oral arguments WRAP.

Now festivities shift to front steps of the court, where litigants will do press.

My biggest takeaway: Tho oral arguments arent ispositive of where court will go, bet Trump staff will be dusting off other statutes that give a prez...

Last week, former NSC China Director Rush Doshi walked us through how China's announcement of rare-earth export controls in early October was an escalating form of geopolitical leverage.

Check out my latest podcast: A Chinese rare earths/magnet cut off can derail the global economy - and affect you directly. Years of planning led to China's near-monopoly. Rare earths are not rare/lucrative, but control over processing = major geopolitical power says @rushdoshi.bsky.social 1/

I just listened to this and hoooly shit. again I do not know much here, but it seems UTTERLY BONKERS to me that the US not only allowed but directly facilitated China's near-monopoly on materials we rely on to this extent. and they 100% have the cheeto's number, too. this is not a good situation D:

China’s move to restrict global access to rare earths and magnets could be cataclysmic — the one-year “pause” announced Sunday doesn’t remove the leverage.

Wait, isn’t there a Michael Moore film about a US president with bad approval ratings who is desperate to change the subject by vilifying 🇨🇦?

Trump announced he is cutting off all trade talks over a tv ad from Canada he dislikes - really. [1 / 2]

Great thread.

There’s a lot of confusion about the de minimis trade loophole being closed & related Customs rules. Especially after a story re. UPS trashing incoming packages & online misinfo that “paperwork backlogs” caused this, which is wrong. Here's what's actually going on:

⚠️ Trump is signaling he may appear for the Nov. 5 oral arguments in the SCOTUS tariff case.

If the Court okays using IEEPA as a catch-all tariff authority, it would effectively thrash a core constitutional check and balance at Congress’s expense.
