Most of Trump's voters weren't committed ideologues who listen to Steve Bannon's podcast or read Curtis Yarvin's pseudo-philosophical musings. Many just voted on the basis of incorrect information they absorbed from our broken media system.

As many have pointed out, Dems faced the same environment that has been taking out incumbent parties everywhere.
A big part of this, however, is that Trump was allowed to rehabilitate himself and his first term relatively unchallenged by the media.
