Useful idiots also ignore that PRC law requires foreign companies to divest 50% if they want to operate Internet services. Special Administrative Measures for Foreign Investment Access, Item 14: "... the foreign shareholding ratio of value-added telecommunications businesses shall not exceed 50%."

Here's screenshots from the PRC government run China Daily showing that until this week, when referring to "Xiaohongshu" it has always used "Little Red Book," not "Rednote." Same goes for the China Communist Party sponsored English language propaganda outlet, Global Times.

Biked/hiked up Guanyin Mountain this morning and managed to get, like, maybe 10 minutes of direct sunlight. Never been more grateful for anything. . . . #taipeiwinternosunever

I translated the lower court judgment in Ruan Xiaohuan's case here: blog.feichangdao.com/2023/03/tran.... Consistent with recent practice, the court said nothing about what was subversive.

I also translated several of his blog posts here: blog.feichangdao.com/2023/07/tran....

Just added an article on Jiao Guobiao (焦国标) to my "Encyclopedia of Censorship in the PRC." Includes examples of Baidu and Sina Weibo censoring his name, and a translation of his "Crusade Against the Central Propaganda Department."

Latest "Encyclopedia of Censorship in the PRC" entry is coincidentally another scholar (after Gao Quanxi) censored for supporting Xu Zhangrun: Tsinghua prof. Guo Yuhua (郭于华). Article includes Baidu's censorship and translations of Guo's essays/interviews.

I did a blog post about censorship of the White Paper Protests on the 1st anniversary last year: blog.feichangdao.com/2023/12/inte.... Checked again today and all PRC search engines are still censoring "白纸革命." You can see archive's of Baidu's censorship of that term here: archive.ph/https://www....

Now that there's a critical mass of China expertise on Bluesky, I won't be posting on Twitter anymore. For those who started following me here, I mainly post my personal photos and about my research on censorship in the PRC. My latest project is an open-source encyclopedia of censorship in the PRC.

Back from a long weekend in Alishan with the in-laws. Great hiking, but also lots of vegetable shopping. Decided to put the purchases to work to mix up a 100% local cocktail - Alishan "lemons," "fire" oranges from my neighbor's father's farm, and a shot of Kaoliang. Not half bad!
