I loved the 1977 TSR Dungeon! boardgame so much when I was a kid. I wonder if the gameplay holds up.

Reading 13th Age 2e #TTRPG and thinking of different melee sorcerer characters you could make by combining the new and improved Spell Fist with various other talents. A tiefling sorcerer with Spell Fist, Infernal Heritage, a big sword, and a Complicated connection with the Diabolist would rule.
A young, red-haired elf sorceress in a long black coat, ruffled white shirt, brown leather breeches, and tall boots laughs joyfully as magical energy swirls around her fists. Behind her is a gnarled, leafless, Tim Burton style tree, and her hummingbird familiar hovers beside her. The text on the page describes the sorcerer talent Spell Fist, which I think is badass. Spell Fist Your style of sorcery emphasizes in-your-face combat. So long as you are not staggered, you can use ranged spells while engaged with enemies without taking opportunity attacks. In addition, choose three of the four following advantages for your hero: (magic shields) You take half-damage from opportunity attacks. (blood ward) When staggered, you gain a +2 bonus to AC. (twist of power) Once per battle, you can use a ranged spell without taking opportunity attacks even while staggered. (explosive flares) Your critical hit range with sorcerer spells against enemies engaged with you expands by 2. Spell Fist Overspill Effect rippling power; 1/battle For each enemy engaged with you, you gain temporary hit points equal to double your level (5th: triple; 8th: quadruple). Adventurer Feat: You can use the d8 melee weapons listed for sorcerers on page 160 without attack penalties. Champion Feat: You gain the fourth Spell Fist advantage. Epic Feat: Twice per battle, you can include one enemy engaged with you as an additional target of any attack spell you cast that targets other enemies.

A big part of the Frankenstein story is that we shouldn’t play god because we are terrible gods: when human beings create an artificial being that acts like a human they abuse and torture it. An LLM isn’t a person but it’s still horrifying to see this play out in real life.

Today I learned that dancer Carolyne Barry, sometimes credited as Carole Shelyne, played the Metron in Star Trek TOS (with a male actor’s voice dubbed over), and an Enterprise engineer in TNG. She was maybe most famous as “the girl with the horn-rimmed glasses” on Shindig!.

Imagine my excitement until I saw there were hundreds of comments.
A post in a Facebook Star Trek group with an image showing two Original Series Starfleet guys who have tan shirts and a different insignia than the delta were all used to today. The post reads, “Were the Antares crew in ‘Charlie X’ Starfleet personnel? I don't recall those tan shirts elsewhere in the series. And what's with the ‘Pac-Man’ insignia instead of the asymmetrical arrowhead?” (The answer is that in TOS each ship has its own insignia on the uniforms, and the delta was the insignia for the Enterprise. After it ended its historic five year mission the delta became the insignia for Starfleet as a whole.)

Today is my friend Monique’s birthday. She would have been 57. We met in high school at 15–I was working in the school cafeteria and I think she asked me for a straw? Later when I showed up for a meeting of the Science Fiction Club I was delighted to find that she was a member. I miss her every day.

I visited Portland last week for a film festival. To get to and from the event I rode public transit and walked—every morning and late at night, alone. It was fine! My visit was great! Here I am waiting for a friend to meet me for breakfast at the Tin Shed Cafe.

It reminded me of Jon Lovitz in Rat Race.
Through a series of accidents Jon Lovitz ends up standing at a podium in front of a reunion of World War Two veterans with Hitler’s car behind him and a smudge of black grease or lipstick above his upper lip that looks like a Hitler mustache.
