Working towards a happier Greater Lafayette, IN using nature-based solutions and increasing access to greenspace around the Wabash River!
We had a great workday killing invasive honeysuckle at a local city park with volunteers and partner orgs. We came out muddy and our park came out healthier! Spotted some #nativeplants rue anemone and waterleaf. Hoping they flourish without the invasives!

Blue mist flower (Conoclinium coelestinum) is looking dreamy in the morning sunlight 😍😘 This blue-purple midwest native flower is usually about 2 feet tall and likes dappled sunlight. It usually prefers medium-wet soils, but these pictures were taken in a bone-dry backyard.

Cup plants are in bloom right now! Native to central IN and much of the midwest US, cup plants have unique leaves that form a small basin that captures water. Critters use these tiny basins as a water source.

Did you leave 1-2 feet of dead stems behind from last year's plants during your spring garden cleanup? The white, fluffy debris on the leaves in these photos is from the insects burrowing out a hole in the stems. Stem-nesting bees use dead plant stalks to lay their eggs.

We had a volunteer workday at Battlefield Memorial in Tippecanoe, IN along the Wabash Heritage Trail yesterday. Purdue student volunteers chipped away at the burning bush infestation along Burnett Creek. We also got to admire the amazing #nativeplants spring ephemerals! So many tiny pants! 🙌

Are you noticing anything greening up in your native plant gardens? It's so exciting to go poke around in the dead leaves and find plants that are waking up for spring. 💚
We found hepatica, bluebells, wood poppy , and bloodroot here in central IN. What #nativeplants are you seeing?

Temps are rising, the sun is shining, and our native gardens are starting to wake up. You may be itching to get out and start "spring garden clean-up," but there are still lots of pollinators snoozing soundly in the stems of your #nativeplants. Leave ~24in of stem for this year's larvae! 💚🐝

We gave a crash course on winter sowing to West Lafayette, IN AmeriCorps members. Collecting native plant seeds and winter sowing in milk jugs is a great way to grow your own hardy native plants for really cheap. You can get 4-6 plugs from one jug easily.
