Crypsiphona ocultaria - Red-lined Looper

One of the most common moths we see, these moths can be found around in parts of Australia. The reason for the moth’s common name becomes apparent when you see the underside of their wings

Candicarina sp.

Cooler evenings last week meant fewer large moths visiting our Perth Hills moth light, which in turn allowed some smaller #inverts to settle.

Like this very small (~5mm in length) planthopper which is endemic to Australia.

Rhipidioides sp.

This very small male Rhipidioides sp. beetle was a new visitor to our moth light this week. This is the only recorded observation in Western Australia. The larvae of this species parasitises cockroaches🪳

Oenochroma ochripennata

One of the moths we recorded in early October while visiting Albany in the south of Western Australia. It took a while to ID this one as it seems they are not commonly recorded. Appears to be endemic to WA

We’re seeing quite a few in the Perth Hills now too. A few come to the moth light in the evening if its on, I think this one might be an Orange Bandit (Pyropsalta rhythmica)

Chasmina pulchra - White Beauty

This moth has a very appropriate common name… because it really is a beauty!!

These moths can be seen across Australia in our warmer months.

Macrobathra bigerella (I think)

Another of the micro moths that we see quite frequently visiting our Perth Hills garden. Seen mid-November

Garrha oncospila

Seen in our Perth Hills garden this week. This moth seems to be endemic to Western Australia, with all 10 observations of it so far on #inaturalist from the southwest. Otherwise, there’s little information on this lovely moth

Eccymatoge callizona - White-spotted Carpet

A new moth visitor to our Perth Hills garden last night and only the second record of this species in Western Australia so far on #inaturalist. Love the black and gold appearance of this moth’s wings.

Seen in the Perth Hills, a male Clouded Footman (Anestia ombrophanes) showing his beautiful yellow hindwings. The hindwings are usually not visible when these moths are at rest

A cool, still evening last night meant fewer moths to the garden moth light but that made it easier to document some of the micro moth visitors.

This moth was ~3mm long and I think might be in the Family Gelechiidae (Twirler moths)

Orgyia athlophora - Western Tussock Moth

🐞🐜🪲🪰🐛🐌 This week (Nov 17-23) is Bugs in My Backyard week in Australia … not that I need any excuse to get out and look for bugs!

And there are lots about at the minute, like these tiny Crusader Bug nymphs (Mictis profana) that had just hatched

Chlorocoma cadmaria - Spectacular Emerald

Happy to see this Spectacular Emerald visiting our Perth Hills moth light this week. These moths appear to be uncommon in Western Australia with only 6 recorded observations in #inaturalist

This small lacewing was a more unusual visitor to the garden light recently. Identified on #inaturalist as Carobius pulchellus, a member of the Brown Lacewing family (Hemerobiidae). This is just the 3rd observation of this species in WA

Without any up to date reference book on Australian moths, we see many moths that I struggle to identify… like this striking moth seen in early November.

I think it’s in the genus Casbia, possibly Casbia oenias (or the Red Casbia)

These two moths were new observations for us, both seen in early November in a coastal area 150km north of Perth.

They look to be Australian Cream Wave Moths (Scopula perlata), although this species of Scopula is an eastern states species

Praxis marmarinopa - the Western Praxis
