Hapanvelli!

For some reason my feed is full of people claiming baseball is the best game ever.

FYI, a little more than a hundred years ago a Finn Lauri Pihkala saw baseball being played and found it wanting. He created something greater: pesäpallo.

End of history.

Mathematician Karl Weierstrass was born #OTD, Halloween, in 1815. 🧪 🎃

The fools at The Academy all said he was mad, but he showed them all in 1872 when he announced that he had created a MONSTER. Let's learn about the terrible thing he did.

V.C. Summer AP1000 construction, stopped in 2017, potentially restarting?
The board of directors of South Carolina’s state-owned utility Santee Cooper voted on Friday to approve the proposal from Brookfield Asset Management to complete two new AP1000 power reactors at the V.C. Summer site in Jenkinsville, S.C.

We just concluded the autumn FIDES-II meeting in Idaho, USA. The Framework has been operating for five years, and it is great to see the results that have been produced. Thanks to Idaho National Laboratory for hosting the meeting.

Beautiful adoption S-curve there when you even out short term noise. And most importantly, it goes up to 100%.
It's absolutely astonishing: In just about 13 years, Norway has skyrocketed from virtually no sales of zero-emission battery electric vehicles to nearly 100% of all new passenger car purchases.

Lomatunnelma siis saavutettu.

Our joint paper on EU-funded projects ELSMOR, McSAFER, and EASI-SMR was just published! This paper is a review of these projects in a dedicated publication of FISA2025 conference.

I was the coordinator of ELSMOR, where we looked at safety topics of light water SMRs.

Näin siinä käy kun muut pelaavat teollisuuspolitiikkaa siinä missä Suomi tukee olemassa olevaa yritystoimintaa: investoinnit menevät muille maille ja osaaminen perästä hetken päästä.
Aikoinaan Venetsian Murano oli lasivalmistuksen globaali keskus. Vuosien saatossa pppia ja tietoa vietiin mm. Amerikkaan, enempää ei ollut antaa. Siinä vaiheessa herättiin siihen, että kilpailuvaltti on menetetty.

Syy: Saksa antautui klo 23, Ranskassa oli 8.5., Neuvostoliitossa 9.5.

Opinpa taas jotain minkä kaikki jo tiesivät.

Your regular reminder that Luddites’ goals and concerns are still very much relevant.
The term "Luddite" as a pejorative synonym for "technophobe" was a technocrat PR coup; that's not what Luddites were about. They were a labour movement fighting to give workers control over technologies which were advancing w/o oversight and rapidly automating them out of their jobs. Sound familiar?
