Orthodox Priest. Husband. Dad. PhD student in NT, Loyola Chicago. 🇵🇷

I find this sort of self-promotion reprehensible. Follow me to learn why.
In case you were looking for a reason to be #thankful this Thanksgiving:
I don’t think they have released the list of conference speakers, but I can at least say that I’ll be there presenting on why the label ‘Semitism’ is dumb when talking about language phenomena in postclassical Greek. That’s the basic gist but I’ll say it ✨fancy✨

Cutting-edge biblical scholar: “Oh, you’re working on mimesis (Auerbach, 1946)? See, I’ve moved way forward from that, so I’m working instead on textual (inter)relations as literary palimpsests (Genette, 1982).”

Current year: 2024.

I enjoy seeing your SBL book hauls, I do, but your talk of “blowing the budget” on a little stack of 10 or 12 titles makes me think you folks just don’t buy enough books in general.

Just heard that Paul McCartney said he wishes he had written Billy Joel’s “Just The Way You Are,” which is nearly but not quite as interesting as the fact that Charles Wesley said he’d give up all of his hymns to have written Isaac Watts’ “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.”

Oh man, just got the email from SBL saying that it’s time to send them my money. That means I have to pay all of the other ones too.

Roughly 30 years behind the literature people, who in turn are roughly 30 years behind the linguistics people. This is certainly true of the cognitive turn, the first stirrings of which went to print in 1959!
In our introduction, we dunk on how bad #biblicalstudies traditionally is with engaging in linguistics work.

The the ritual eating of the anthropomorphic pop-tart is the best thing to come down the pipeline for fundamental theology since Lonergan.

Tomorrow I finish teaching my first ever NT Intro course, for diaconal and catechist candidates in our diocese. Each session had a Moisés Silva chapter or article as part of the assigned reading.

Never doubt my commitment to the bit. #MoisificalInfallibility

I recently gave a talk introducing the Septuagint to a general audience. If you're interested, you can check out the link to the talk here: youtu.be/Snvb7qNhNCM
Thankful for the opportunity to interact with this group, both in-person and online.

The gratuitous hate started early this year, so here’s your annual reminder that “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is the perfect Advent song: it centers Desire (whence “All I Want”); it stresses that it isn’t Christmas yet (whence “for Christmas”); and it is oriented to communion (whence “Is You”).

Listen, I’m not one for petty triumphalisms, BUT PLEASE 😭

Extra Hour: UNLOCKED! Wait, what do you mean that you’re not supposed to stay up for it?

Once again I've been faced with the vexing realization that, if what I really want is to write and be productive, I require seven stenographers and seven copyists to take down my dictation, after the manner of Master Origen.

I’m teaching a NT Intro course for our Diocese’s diaconal and catechetical program, and I have SUCH a good group! Bright, engaged, articulate, alert. 😭

True to form, I basically forgot for a few weeks that Bluesky exists.

Two things theology types should avoid:

1. Theologizing on the basis of outdated ANE research
2. Etymologies

Two things biblical studies types should avoid:

1. Playing theologian after protesting they’re only historians
2. Etymologies

Hello, I’m officially “I-fell-from-my-armchair-face-first-while-asleep-and-hurt-myself” years old. Happy Sunday.

Oh wait, it isn’t even midnight yet.

Two chilling editorial blunders in Black & Merkle (eds.), Linguistics and NT Greek (Baker Academic, 2020):

1) A description of ✨Moisés Silva✨ as “irrepressible,” which clearly should read “infallible.”

2) The mysterious appending of “-Form” to @mikeaubrey.bsky.social’s obviously complete title.

Kylo Ren = Julian the Apostate

Thank you. I will not be taking questions at this time.

Just heard on the radio the expression “consuming media,” so here’s your occasional reminder that every time someone asserts that they have "consumed" something that they haven't manducated or imbibed, the bowls of the divine wrath teeter on the brink of their eschatological outpouring.

One of the fun things about Blooskie (correct pronunciation, will not budge) right now is that the Venn diagram of “Following,” “Discover,” and “Popular With Friends” is basically a circle.
