Particularly if he's a South African billionaire man-child.

Woohoo! Congrat's David! Do they consider you less of a threat than Roko's Basilisk?

See, you're making the assumption there that they're fun people, rather than just greedy arseholes.

Most are totally incapable of communicating their experiences. PKD was one of the rare people who could.

100% this. Sociopathy is being incapable of empathy, & such people make the world a shittier place.
November 14, 2025 at 11:37 PM
Yeah. It's also very painful. Like, how much must it suck to feel at a deep emotional level that the whole world around you is deliberately, constantly, fucking with you?

IMO, PKD's most important theme is the question of what makes human human. He foregrounds this in 'Androids', with the Voight Kampt Empathy Test, which tests for empathy reactions at a biological level. Or arguably tests for sociopathy, by testing subjects for faking empathy.

I mean, I have often tipped trans women friends who are having a hard time financially.

Okay, so some PKD rec's:
"Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"
"Ubik"
"Confessions of a Crap Artist"
"The Man in the High Castle"
"A Maze of Death"

These are his novels that had the biggest impact on me, & that I think are his most important works.

Ugh. I have some horror stories about poor people with psych issues who were horribly abused by the psych system.

Heinlein was weird AF. It's been 50 years & I'm still not sure what to make of him.

If you want to know more about PKD's sex life, read his non-SF novels. Eg; Milton Lumpky.

Yeah, for sure. I'd argue that psychedelics just made things worse.

I have a schizo family member, so I'm pretty sensitised to that viewpoint. PDK's stories routinely broke reality in ways that are very aligned with a schizophrenic viewpoint. "Clans of the Alphane Moon", "Ubik", & many others are good examples of a protagonist watching their world breaking apart.

Self medication is a thing now, & was much more so in his day.

I'm kind of showing my age here. I grew up with PKD's books in the 70s & 80s, & am familiar with the contemporary commentary.
