Even though it’s more complicated to talk about responsibility for outcomes of decisions, we cannot let that be used as a smokescreen to let people absolve themselves of that responsibility.

When AI makes a decision, it follows reasoning that was encoded by its developers. In some sense, that means the software developers have pre-made that decision by outlining the decision-making process. That means whoever made the software holds responsibility for the results of its decisions.

Also, while they didn’t make that decision, they have the responsibility of ensuring the right decision was made before passing it on.
November 27, 2023 at 7:43 PM
Even though the decision itself is no longer being made by a human, the same people who were previously making the decisions are now the ones passing off the decision made by AI.

In reality, AI systems will only mimic the decisions that humans tell them to make.

AI has been used to make decisions about insurance adjustment, bank loans, employment, and sentencing in criminal court cases. The thinking is that because computers are using math and math is objective, then this is how we can make purely objective decisions.

That’s true for the quality of production, and more importantly for the role it plays in society. People should not have to be worried about losing their livelihood because of a tool that should make all of our lives easier.

AI is most effective if we use it as a support tool for human labor, rather than a tool to replace human labor.
November 21, 2023 at 4:52 PM
If we see widespread job displacement across all these industries, then what jobs are left available for people to work? Using it to replace people means limiting the opportunities for work on a large scale, which means a growing chunk of our population are left with no way to support themselves.
November 21, 2023 at 4:52 PM
Automation should be making our lives easier since it means a person can do the same labor with less effort in less time, which can also increase productivity. However, it is more often used to cut labor costs by replacing human workers altogether.
November 21, 2023 at 4:52 PM
Recent advances in AI will be able to automate tasks in more industries than we could list, but we should keep in mind that it still requires a lot of human oversight and I think that will still be the case for many years.

I will be posting more in-depth explanations of these topics and the threats they pose in the coming days, so stay tuned! #vote4focht

That’s what deepfakes are designed to do. When we can fabricate a video of someone saying anything, seeing is no longer believing, even though we assume videos to be accurate to reality.
November 20, 2023 at 8:12 PM
The third is the degradation of our value of truth. In our current media landscape, it’s hard to distinguish fact from misinformation, and AI will only make that harder.
November 20, 2023 at 8:12 PM
Instead, AI is often used as an excuse to say, “Well, I didn’t make that decision, this computer did, so it’s not my fault that it caused a problem.”
November 20, 2023 at 8:12 PM
If someone is making decisions about your insurance, being hired or fired from a job, or sentencing a court case, there should be someone we can hold accountable for that decision.
November 20, 2023 at 8:12 PM
The second is accountability for decisions. Since AI is designed for decision-making, it is often used to prevent accountability for its decisions.
November 20, 2023 at 8:11 PM
Over the next decade, we’re going to see a lot of industries being impacted by AI the same way the manufacturing industry was at the end of the 20th century and into the 2000s.
November 20, 2023 at 8:11 PM
The first is the devaluation of labor. AI is a tool designed for automating decision-making, and—just like any other form of automation—it will be used to replace human workers.
November 20, 2023 at 8:11 PM
When we talk about the harms of technology, it’s important that we focus on the real harms. If we get caught up on science fiction, that’s what we direct our energy and political resources toward, and then it becomes harder for us to create solutions to the real problems.

Autonomous cars still cause far more damage, injuries, and fatalities than a human driver, and yet we still allow them on public roads.
November 7, 2023 at 8:54 PM
Driverless cars are a great example, we give AI systems full control over these cars and deploy them on public roadways before they’re developed enough to be reliable.
