On the one hand we need your expertise more than ever; on the other hand, will anyone listen?

I dream of the perfect mattress! But it's such a long road because first you have to get rid of the imperfect-but-ok mattress, then order a new mattress, then realise it's worse than the old one, then faff about finding another one while worrying it'll be even worse. I doff my nightcap to you.

Agree. Wish someone would tell all!

And surely, singing Nazi songs in actual German would have got his head kicked in???

Excellent, will order.

Thank you, I will look this up.

Thank you, this is what I thought! Beyond extreme edge lording but from what others have said also a sub-sub-sub-culture that extended from pre-Oswald Mosley to the National Front. Maybe he was on that continuum, maybe his family were. I would watch his Who Do You Think You Are…

Horrendous. Time I went and read some modern history books, I think!

Thank you for this horrible spectacle. I have been shocked out of my naivety!

That explains it, thank you. I think I have been naive not to be factoring in the NF & BNP. The dominant culture being so anti-German (let alone anti-Nazi) well into the 90s made me think this was rare or unusual. So much for that.

(As far as I'm aware... in my limited bubble...)

Thanks for giving me this song though! Wiki tells me it was taken on by the British Union of Fascists so that might have continued its use among some in the UK. I remember at school all sorts of casual racism and mocking of German students about the holocaust, but no one sang this stuff by the 90s.

I've just quote tweeted Adam's post asking what the songs were. I'll google this one but you might know: were Nazi songs (in German?) known and sung in the UK by sympathizers in the post-war decades? It astonishes me that any British boys (however deeply unpleasant) were singing German Nazi songs.

I was thinking a tight-lipped Fiona Shaw as the senior Lady Vere-Thissett, and (if only) Joyce Grenfell as the second. AI can probably oblige but I don’t think I’d want it to.
