Cul. #TheWhiteLotus #Amorfati

Improve a first line by substituting Mrs. Dalloway.

Longtemps j'ai couché Mrs. Dalloway de bonne heure.
Improve a first line by substituting Mrs. Dalloway.

In a hole in the ground there lived Mrs. Dalloway.
Improve a first line by substituting Mrs. Dalloway.

It was a queer, sultry summer, the summer they executed Mrs. Dalloway, and I didn't know what I was doing in New York.

From Elon Musk's diary:
"Before the old idiot could throw another tantrum, I took him to Burger King. There, he wanted the crown, and I was supposed to take a picture of him wearing it. I wondered: how can I make him look even more pathetic than he already does? I think I did a pretty good job."

My Top 10 Reads of the Year: 9. Fang Fang, "Funérailles molles" (China 2016)

A "soft burial", leading to profound trauma, as in the case of young Dayun, who is forced to bury her family after they are murdered during the Agrarian Reform of the 1950s in Maoist China.

My Top 10 Reads of the Year: Dahlia de la Cerda, "Chiennes de garde" (Mexico 2021)

Dahlia de la Cerda is among the new wave of Mexican authors breaking away from conventional tropes. A word of warning to those who still believe Latin American literature is confined to magical realism.

My Top 10 Reads of the Year: 7. Gabrielle Filteau-Chiba, Encabanée (Quebec, 2018)

In the snowy Kamouraska region, deep in the Quebec forest, Anouk, a rebellious young woman, seeks refuge in a rustic cabin. A poignant tale of solitude, introspection, pushing one’s limits, and survival.

My Top 10 Reads of the Year: 6. Andrés Neuman, "Bariloche" (Argentina 1999)

This novel reminded me of a long Dylanesque ballad, perhaps "Desolation Row". An urban blues story that could unfold in any metropolis of the South: Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Guadalajara, Phoenix, Reykjavik...

My Top 10 Reads of the Year: 5. Bob Dylan, "The Philosophy of Modern Song" (USA 2022)

Dylan wouldn’t be Dylan without sneaking in some off-the-wall digressions: for instance, musings on the "passé composé" and the "imparfait", and the challenge of translating those nuances into English.

My Top 10 Reads of the Year: 4. Piergiorgio Pulixi, "L'île des âmes" (Italy 2019)

Piergiorgio Pulixi delivers a gripping noir novel where two policewomen investigate a series of gruesome murders in Sardinia. With villages ruled by omertà, corrupt local politicians, and a rather shady guru.

My Top 10 Reads of the Year: 3. Prosper Mérimée, "Histoire de Don Pèdre Ier" (France 1848)

Pedro I, nicknamed "the Cruel," had never crossed my mind before this book, and probably he never will again. But this journey through the dusty pages of the past was worth the detour. #BookSky

Noel Gallagher, in addition to his renowned musical talents, has another extraordinary gift—time travel. In this rare and surreal moment, we see him transported back to 1968, witnessing the iconic rendition of "Hey Jude" by The Beatles.

My Top 10 Reads of the Year: 2. Astrid H. Roemer, "Gebrochen-Weiss" (Suriname 2019)

This novel, a true kaleidoscope as suggested by its title, explores the many facets of memory, much like the refraction of white light that gives rise to a rainbow.

My Top 10 Reads of the Year: 1. Shaun Tan, The Arrival (USA, 2006)

As migrants, we have all felt this: the strangeness of the everyday, the efforts to navigate unknown cultural codes, and the constant challenge of adapting to the unfamiliar.
